School disciplinary policy is changing

January 16, 2012

WOONSOCKET — The School Committee is stepping back from its active role in disciplinary procedures for local public school students.
The panel voted this week to allow school administrators and School Superintendent Giovanna Donoyan to handle disciplinary hearings it has been conducting for a number of years.
The change is an off-shoot of School Committeewoman Vimala Phongsavanh's review of school department policies.

'Too early to make any predictions' in R.I. wrestling

January 15, 2012

CUMBERLAND — When it came time to wrestle the finals of Saturday night’s John D. Gorman Memorial Tournament at Cumberland High, two chairs at matside were occupied by coaches from Bishop Hendricken (Kevin Hennessey) and Warwick Veterans (George Schmeider).
“They’re just wrestling junkies,” Cumberland coach Steve Gordon said with a laugh on Sunday morning, after his balanced team had captured the team title despite crowning only one individual champion (Tom LaCroix at 195). “Kevin and George probably just wanted to see our boys wrestle. They’re scouting, of course, checking us out.

WARWICK – Mount St. Charles suffered another tough Division I loss on Saturday night, losing a 3-2 decision to unbeaten Bishop Hendricken.
Dave Mitchell netted a power-play goal with 3:48 left in the game to break the tie and improve the Hawks’ league record to 8-0-1. Four-time defending state champion Mount fell to 4-4.
Hendricken took a 1-0 lead in the first period when senior forward Robert Beuhrer beat Mount goalie Brian Larence. Mount tied the game late in the second period on a goal by Brandon Borges.

Clippers capture John D. Gorman Memorial Tournament

January 14, 2012

CUMBERLAND – It was a strange kind of tournament for Cumberland, which easily clinched the John D. Gorman Memorial team title before the finals began on Saturday night, then saw its first four finalists lose before unbeaten Tom LaCroix salvaged some Clipper pride with a convincing win at 195 pounds.
Lincoln High heavyweight Nick Zicuis capped the tournament with a 3-2 victory in the 285-pound finals, scoring a late takedown to edge Durfee High’s Andre Torres.

Cumberland boys, girls on pace to peak at swim state meet

January 14, 2012

CUMBERLAND — For 22 straight years, Bishop Hendricken has worn the crown and this season it doesn’t seem like that will change.
La Salle Academy has dominated the girls’ side the past four years and an equally-strong squad has returned for the winter campaign.
It will be difficult once again to knock the two powerhouses from their perches at the state meet next month.
The rest…it’s anybody’s guess?

Police catch copper clipper

January 14, 2012

WOONSOCKET – Another copper clipper was in the can Thursday morning thanks to a tip from an alert citizen who heard someone rummaging in a vacant house in the Bernon section and called the police, they said.
Elias Herrera, 41, of Woonsocket, was arrested outside 350 Carrington Ave. at 6:19 a.m., said Detective Lt. Eugene Jalette.
“Herrera was captured while attempting to flee from a side entrance,” he said. “Inside the house there was evidence that Herrera was removing copper piping.”

Bellingham Fire Chief Ranieri answers the call of retirement

January 14, 2012

BELLINGHAM — Looking back over his lengthy career, Richard F. Ranieri pointed out one overriding concern that any fire chief has when the alarm sounds in the station house.
"You just hope that the day will end without an injury or fatality involving one of your firefighters or a member of the public," Ranieri said. "We are responsible for what happens, and it is a pretty awesome responsibility.”

Mount girls blank Cranston co-op

January 13, 2012

PROVIDENCE --- The state finals won’t be held for another two months, but that didn’t stop two-time defending champion Mount St. Charles from feeling right at home in a rare regular-season affair at Providence College’s Schneider Arena, the home of the RIIL hockey championships.
Senior Caitlin Shea and freshman Elisabeth Bedard each netted a pair of goals and senior Lauren Levesque added a goal and two assists on Friday night to lead the Mounties to a dominant 5-0 win over the Cranston Thunderbirds co-op team.

Fugere gets Woonsocket healthy in victory

January 13, 2012

WOONSOCKET – There is always plenty that can be learned from a loss.
Coming off a 15-point setback to East Providence just a few days earlier, Woonsocket used its added knowledge from that contest to its advantage on Friday night and earned a decisive 54-31 victory over a young Lincoln squad at Savaria Gymnasium.
Kailey Fugere, who was out with the flu in the Novans’ 54-39 loss to the Townies back on Tuesday, was back in the lineup. Still not 100 percent, Fugere finished with an all-around strong game for the Novans with 26 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and four blocks.

PawSox pitcher Alex Wilson works toward goal

January 13, 2012

PAWTUCKET --- Alex Wilson knows all about the rags-to-riches tale of Kurt Warner, the former Super Bowl-winning St. Louis Rams quarterback and NFL MVP, who just a few years prior to his breakout ’99 season, had worked part-time as a stockboy at a supermarket during his climb to stardom.
That’s because from October to December, the Boston Red Sox prospect had spent his weekday mornings making a few extra bucks by stocking shelves at a Lowe’s home improvement store near his Hurricane, W.V. residence.
