Alfred Cournoyer

BURRILLVILLE- Alfred Cournoyer, 83, died Friday, April 27, 2012 in Bayberry Commons, Pascoag. He was the husband of Lillian (Choquette) Cournoyer of Pascoag, whom he married on May 30, 1950.
Born in Slatersville, he was the son of the late Nazaire and Eva (Guertin) Cournoyer.
Alfred worked as a Caster at American Standard of Wauregan, CT for 33 years before retiring. He was a member of VFW Post in Florida and of Pascoag Knights of Columbus. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the US Marine Corps and was a Veteran of the Korean War.

UXBRIDGE, MA- Shirley (Russell) Picchioni, 78, of North Uxbridge died Tuesday April 24, 2012 in Beaumont Skilled Nursing and Rehab. Center, Northbridge. She was the wife of John V. Picchioni, Sr.
A longtime resident of North Uxbridge, Mrs. Picchioni was employed as a registered nurse at Landmark Hospital in Woonsocket for many years. Later, she worked for St. Vincents Hospital and Beaumont Nursing Home.
She was born Dec. 6, 1933 in Worcester, daughter of the late Raymond and Regina (Paquin) Russell and was a graduate of St. Vincents School of Nursing, Worcester.

BELLINGHAM- Alan K. Remillard, 52, of Bellingham, MA passed away on Friday, April 27, 2012 at Tufts Medical Center, Boston, MA with his family and fiancee by his side after being stricken at home earlier in the week. He was the beloved fianc of Nancy Beschi and they were to be married on July 13, 2013.
Born on December 30, 1959, he was the son of the late Leo R. and Viola R. "Dolly" (Lajoie) Remillard.

Albert Lee Gaffney

WOONSOCKET- Albert Lee Gaffney, Sr., 80, of Pine St. Woonsocket, died Thursday at Trinity Health Center. He was the loving husband of Ethel M. (Jeter) Gaffney.
Born in South Carolina, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Troxcell (Gibson) Gaffney. He was a resident of Woonsocket for the past 46 years.
Mr. Gaffney was employed by Hyman Brickle Corporation for many years until his retirement 20 years ago.

Harrisville Hose company marks 100 years

BURRILLVILLE — Harrisville Hose Company No. 1 is gearing up for a major milestone: its 100th birthday.
On Saturday, May 5, the fire department will celebrate 100 years with a banquet at Crystal Lake Golf Course in Burrillville. Former members that were located have been invited as well as many other guests.
The Harrisville Fire District is comprised of the Harrisville Fire Department, Hose Company No. 1 and the Harrisville Water Department. It is located in the heart of the Town of Burrillville, and encompasses the historic villages of Harrisville and a portion of Glendale.

MSC's Bill Belisle to receive honor from R.I. Reds Heritage Society

PROVIDENCE — America’s most successful and respected high school hockey coach will be presented with the R. I. Reds Heritage Society’s R. I. Native-born Hockey Achievement Award. Normand “Bill” Belisle, the longtime schoolboy head coach at Mount St. Charles, will receive the honor at the organization’s 12th annual reunion at Goddard State Park in Warwick on Sunday, August 5.

Meeting Monday for at-risk homeowners

WOONSOCKET – State Reps. Robert D. Phillips (D-Dist. 51, Woonsocket), Lisa Baldelli-Hunt (D-Dist. 49, Woonsocket) and Jon D. Brien (D-Dist. 50, Woonsocket) have invited Rhode Island Housing to hold an informational meeting about the Hardest Hit Fund Rhode Island for at-risk homeowners.
The meeting will be held on Monday from 6-8 p.m. in Harris Hall, 169 Main St. and include a breakdown of changes to HHFRI that will make it easier for struggling homeowners to obtain assistance with mortgage payments.

Fast-moving Hope Street blaze leaves 15 homeless

WOONSOCKET – A late morning fire Saturday forced residents of a five-family apartment building at 24 Hope St. to flee for their lives.
All of the residents were reported to have made it to safety even though two were forced to jump from a second-floor window and a pregnant woman and her young child had to be assisted from their apartment by a neighbor.
The 11:23 a.m. fire heavily damaged the three-story, wood-frame building and the reported 15 people living there were all expected to be left homeless.

WOONSOCKET — Woonsocket found the perfect way to top Thursday afternoon’s big victory over the Prout School -- by coming back the very next day to soundly beat a Division II-North rival on the road.
The Villa Novans broke open a tight game by rallying for four runs in the top of the fifth inning and rode the splendid five-hit pitching of freshman ace Amanda Nunez the rest of the way to a windswept 9-2 victory over Burrillville.
