WOONSOCKET --- Cumberland High and the Division II semifinals have gone hand-in-hand for the better part of last decade, and that trendâs going to continue this weekend.
Michael Kinchâs multiple-goal night and goalie Michaelangelo Federiciâs 33-save effort were the keys to success for the Clippers on Monday night in their 4-2 victory over Pilgrim High in the third and deciding game of their best-of-three quarterfinal-round series at Adelard Arena.
PROVIDENCE - When North Smithfield and Central played each other during the league season, the two Division III squads split their two games with both teams winning on their home court by single digits.
Head coach David Ruff didn't anticipate anything but an all-out battle when his second-seeded Northmen matched against the No. 3 Knights in Monday's semifinal matchup at Rhode Island College.
Ruff got exactly what he expected, but his only wish was that the numbers on the scoreboard were a little different.

PROVIDENCE â There were not too many onlookers that figured Monday nightâs Division III semifinal contest would be a close affair.
The late game pitted top-ranked Middletown, a team with just one loss on its record, versus No. 5 seed Davies Tech, a .500 ballclub.
Add the fact that the Islanders defeated the Patriots by 26 points in their last meeting on Feb. 24.
A blowout certainly seemed inevitable, but head coach Gerry Suggs and his gutsy squad never let it happen.
PROVIDENCE â Just days after Col. Brendan Doherty announced his resignation as Superintendent of the State Police, Gov. Lincoln Chafee has selected U.S. Marshal Steven OâDonnell as his replacement.
Chafee introduced OâDonnell as âa leader who has not only met expectations, but continuously exceeded them during a long and distinguished career.â He recalled that, in 1996, then-President Bill Clinton named OâDonnell as one of the nationâs 10 âTop Cops.â
