Bookcase falls on, kills toddler

WOONSOCKET – An 18-month-old boy was killed at home Monday when a bookshelf toppled over onto the boy’s chest, police said.
The death was still under investigation as of press time. Police Chief Thomas Carey said the incident appears to have been a tragic accident, but an official finding on the cause will not be issued until the police have finished their investigation.
“We still have some work to do on it,” the chief said. “The parents are quite distraught.”

Glenis Hynes

WOONSOCKET - Glenis Hynes, 95, of Mendon Rd., Woonsocket and formerly of Cumberland passed away Saturday in the Ballou Home. She was the wife of the late Joseph P. Hynes.
Born in England, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Lavenia Whalley. She resided in Cumberland for many years before moving to Woonsocket 23 years ago.
She was a weaver employed at various area mills for many years. Mrs. Hynes was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She leaves a son Joseph B. Hynes and his wife Lorraine of Cumberland.

BLACKSTONE, MA. - Elizabeth M. "Betty" (O'Brien) Morin, 88, of Blackstone, MA died Sunday, October 14, 2012 in Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket, RI. Her husband of 20 years, Albert E. Morin, Sr., predeceased her.
Born in Whitinsville, MA, she was the daughter of the late John and Ella (Hickey) O'Brien.
Betty was a teacher's aide for the Blackstone-Millville Regional School District for 10 years, retiring in 1993. She was a communicant of St. Paul's Church. Betty was a loving mother who enjoyed spending time with her family.

Jack-o'-lantern fest lights up fall nights

But the creator of Providence's Jack-o'-lantern Spectacular says the oohs and ahs he hears from children and adults make putting on one of the nation's largest jack-o'-lantern shows worth all the work.

Two hurt in stabbing in North Smithfield bar

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Police in North Smithfield say two people are expected to survive after being injured in a stabbing incident outside a local bar.
According to a press release from the North Smithfield Police Department, the two victims were injured in the parking lot of the Lower Level Bar off Eddie Dowling Highway early Sunday morning.
An official at Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket called police at about 1:45 a.m. to report that one person was being treated for stab wounds. Police later learned that a second victim was being treated at the same hospital.

WOONSOCKET — The Northern Rhode Island Council of the Arts is hosting a Pasta Dinner in conjunction with Catholic Financial Life, District 1 (Rhode Island and South Central Mass.) on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at the Italian Workingmen's Club, 947 Diamond Hill Road, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The dinner will be prepared by local chef Gary McLaughlin and will feature all-you-can-eat pasta, meatballs, salad, bread and more. Tickets are $8 for adults age 10 and older; $4 for children age 9 and under; and free for children age 2 and under.
