MSC will play Springfield's Cathedral at Fenway

November 17, 2011

WOONSOCKET — Mount St. Charles Academy will be kicking off 2012 in style -- with a non-league showdown against a formidable Central Mass. foe at Fenway Park.
Mount coach Dave Belisle reported on Thursday that the four-time defending champions will face off with powerhouse Cathedral High of Springfield, Mass. on Monday, Jan. 2 in the 7:30 p.m. nightcap of a tripleheader at the home of the Boston Red Sox.
An added treat to the game is that the proceeds from it will benefit the victims of the tornado that struck Springfield on June 1.

Woonsocket hockey team welcomes strong turnout

November 17, 2011

WOONSOCKET — It seems like a very long time ago, but it’s been only a decade since Woonsocket High was considered one of the competitive teams in the Met B-North ranks, racking up double digits in victories and making solid runs in the playoffs year after year.
Unfortunately for the Villa Novans, a lot has changed since their last winning season as a Met B (now Division II) team eight years ago. Only twice have they posted a winning record -- in Division III -- and last season, they hit rock bottom with a 1-15 mark that saw them get outscored 161-18.

Shakespeare preaches patience to Red Sox fans

November 17, 2011

Only in New England can you be sitting in an audience, watching a great presentation of Hamlet by the Gamm Theatre acting company of Pawtucket, when during intermission a man turns around in his seat and asks: “Who’s going to be the next manager of the Red Sox?”
The interrogator was Bobby Fields, a former Pawtucket West student-athlete. He probably won’t recognize the rest of this but Shakespeare might.

Hospital merger paperwork incomplete

November 17, 2011

WOONSOCKET — After a preliminary review of Landmark Medical Center’s application to merge with Steward Health Care System, state regulators have deemed the paperwork incomplete, but a Landmark spokesman dismissed the notion that the assessment means the merger is in jeopardy.
“It’s not a bump,” said Bill Fischer. “Quite frankly it was expected because if you look at history there’s no hospital conversion that I’m aware of that’s had an application deemed complete on the first pass.”

Feeding the hungry with metal

November 17, 2011

WOONSOCKET — Luigi Porreca Jr. is not a magician, but he and his father are going to turn metal into food for the poor this year — again.
The proprietors of L&R Scrap Metal Co. are sponsoring the 2nd Annual Help Feed the Hungry for the Holidays event, which raised enough cash to provide about 500 dinners for the hungry last year.
“This year we hope to make it a thousand,” says Porreca.
But L&R needs your help — or at least your unwanted appliances — to make it happen.
