NORTH SMITHFIELD - Melodie A. (Bird) LaRose 59, of Second Ave., died July 31 in the St. Antoine Residence. Ms. LaRose was born in Portland ME, a daughter of the late Kenneth and Leslie (Hersom) Bird. She was a Woonsocket resident most of her life and worked as a picker for CVS for many years.

James W. Gummo

WOONSOCKET - James W. Gummo, 65, died Friday, August 10, 2012 in Providence. He was the husband of Norma (Doura) Gummo, to whom he had been married since 1999. Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late John and Gertrude (Chabot) Gummo.
James worked in construction as a Supervisor for Certified Power Systems until his recent retirement. He was also a member of the Italian Workingmen's Club, Woonsocket.

Martha C. McIntyre

WOONSOCKET - Martha C. (Keriaco) McIntyre, 86, of Woonsocket, died August 8, 2012 in the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence surrounded by her loving family. Her husband of 62 years, Leo R. McIntyre, predeceased her.
Born in Woonsocket, RI, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Catherine (Custer) Keriaco.
Martha was a graduate of the RI School of the Deaf. She was a communicant of St. Charles Borromeo Church.

WOONSOCKET - Eugene J. "Skip" Goguen, 68, of Privilege St, Woonsocket died Sunday, August 5, 2012 at Landmark Medical Center. He was the husband of Diane (Doten) Goguen. They were married for 44 years.
Born in Woonsocket, he was a son of the late Arthur and May (Paine) Goguen. Skip was a resident of Woonsocket for most of his life. He lived in Walpole, MA for several years in his youth.
Mr. Goguen was employed by Valley Cab Company for over 20 years before retiring in 2006.

MIDDLETOWN, RI - Theresa A. (Lariviere) Lamoureux, 87, of Village House Nursing Home, Newport, RI, formerly of 4 Nakomis Drive, Middletown, died on Thursday, August 9, 2012, at Village House.
She was the wife of the late Emile Lamoureux.
Born in Woonsocket, RI on November 26, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Cora (Nault) Lariviere.
Terry was a communicant of St. Lucy's Church. She was an avid bingo player and loved bowling.

Home invasion leads to chase, arrests

WOONSOCKET (AP) — Woonsocket police say they have several people in custody after a home invasion and subsequent car chase.
Police say three men broke into an apartment on Front Street at about 7 a.m. Sunday wearing masks and demanding cash.
Residents told police at least two of the men had guns and at least one shot was fired. Nobody was hurt.
Police chased a gray BMW from the scene.
The driver was arrested after she crashed near Hamlet Ave. and Cumberland street
Police say other arrests were made after passengers fled the vehicle during the pursuit.

High school football opens for business on Monday

Don’t tell area high school football coaches that these truly are the dog days of summer. They don’t want to hear about such talk.
Monday marks the commencement of preseason training camps across the state and to suggest that teams are seeking to hit the ground running would be a gross understatement. The importance of the coming week cannot be underscored – albeit for a myriad of reasons.

Back to School celebration offers free supplies

WOONSOCKET — Summer vacation is winding down for local students and that had Jacqueline Dowdy back before the School Committee this week talking about the annual Back to School Celebration in the city.
Dowdy is the Woonsocket coordinator for the statewide Back to School program that has put free school supplies in the hands of students for the past 13 years. Woonsocket has participated for the past eight years.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Me. — By no means should Navigant Credit Union Post 85 feel blue after the local ball club saw its season come to an end Saturday in the Northeast Regional American Legion Baseball Tournament.
Sure, no one wants to lose, but even after a 4-2 setback to Barnstable, Mass., Navigant has much to celebrate. For a team that a week ago came out of nowhere to capture the R.I. Senior Division championship, the local lads enjoyed a storybook ride that saw them put forth quite the fight right up to the bitter end.
