PAWTUCKET â€“ The Pawtucket Red Sox keep finding ways to win games, even as their 24-man playing roster is adjusted seemingly every day according to the organizational needs.
On Friday night, Pawtucket gained a split of its four-game series with Columbus as new addition Greg Smith hurled one-run baseball over seven innings during a 7-1 victory. Smith had been released by Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last week after compiling a 3-3 mark in 13 games for the Yankees.
WOONSOCKET- Frederick C. "Fred" Coughlin, Jr., 68, of Woonsocket, died Thursday at Landmark Medical Center with his family at his side. He was the loving husband of Claudette L. (DuBois) Coughlin. They were married on January 19, 1963.
Born in Westerly, his father was the late Frederick C. Coughlin and his mother was the late Julia Hermes.
Mr. Coughlin came to Woonsocket at a young age and remained a lifelong resident of the city. He was brought up by his maternal grandparents whom he looked upon as his second parents.
L. Andre Chartier
NORTH SMITHFIELD- L. Andre Chartier, 81, of Colerick St., died Friday, August 19, 2011 in The Friendly Home, Woonsocket. He was the husband of Teresa (Kane) Chartier whom he married December 29, 1951.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Lucien S. and Antonia (Valcourt) Chartier.
William L. Hadley
WOONSOCKET- William L. "Bill" Hadley, 56, of Woonsocket, died Thursday.
Born in Woonsocket, he was a son of Rachel (Bois) Hadley of Woonsocket and the late Francis Hadley.
Bill lived in Arizona and Wyoming for many years and worked as a truck driver.
Bill was an avid motorcyclist, enjoyed computers and was a Patriots fan. He was also cast as an extra in several film productions.
Arthur N. Clem
WOONSOCKET- Arthur N. Clem 78, of Bound Rd. died Thursday at Landmark Medical Center. He was the husband of Muriel (Lavallee) Clem.
Born in Milford, MA he was a son of the late, Arthur Clem and Dora (Lague) Lataille.
Roger W. Duquet
EUSTIS, FL- Roger W. Duquet 64, of Eustis, Fl died on June 21,2011 @ Hopsice House, Tavares, Fl.
Born in Providence, RI he was the son of the late Frank W. Duquet and Dolores M (Salmon) Duquet.
He lived in RI until joining the Navy where he served 14 years, with two tours in Viet Nam on the "Swift Boat".
He was employed by Toshiba until retiring due to illness.
He is survived by four sons- Rodney E. Duquet stationed in Japan; Kevin L. Duquet of Garden Grove, Ca; Tony L. Duquet of Garden Grove, Ca; and Roger W. Duquet of Guam.
Norbert H. Hanks Sr.
WOONSOCKET- Norbert H. Hanks Sr., 87, of Waterview Apartments, died August 5, 2011, at a nursing home in Brookline, MA. He had previously lived in North Smithfield, RI for many years.
At his request, no service will be held.
Mr. Hanks was born July 26, 1924, in Providence, RI.
Mr. Hanks served in the United States Navy, during World War II as a Gunners Mate. He worked for several textile companies including Worcester Textile and Woonsocket Weaving. He was an avid bowler and served the community as a baseball coach for many years.
As the players and coaches in the Cumberland American camp discovered this week, thereâ€™s nothing little about the Little League World Series.
On the surface, competing in this grand spectacle â€“ how else would you describe an event that includes participants hailing from around the country and the world? â€“ can seem overwhelming. ESPN cameras are practically everywhere, which CALL manager Dave Belisle hinted at earlier this week upon stating, â€śAll of the eyes of the world are on Williamsport.â€ť
Edward A. Grenier
WOONSOCKET- Edward A. Grenier, 84, of Pond St., died Wednesday, August 17, 2011 in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Providence. He was the husband of the late Rita L. (Beauregard) Grenier.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late William O. Grenier and Florence (Messier) Grenier-Bryant.
WOONSOCKET- Eileen M. (Silvia) Champagne, 77, of Marie Anne Ct., passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 17, 2011 in Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket, after a courageous battle. She was the wife of Robert G. Champagne whom she married July 10, 1954.
Born in Pawtucket, RI, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Adeline (Rochea) Silvia.
