PAWTUCKET â Tuesday morning saw a small group of PawSox players huddle around the clubhouse television as a contrite Ozzie Guillen attempted to move past the uproar he caused over supportive remarks the Miami Marlins manager made in reference to Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
Among those who sat and watched Guillen with great interest were Jose Iglesias and Luis Exposito. In fact, the pair stood side-by-side for roughly 10 minutes before Iglesias plopped himself down into a leather chair, his eyes clearly fixated on what Guillen was saying.
CUMBERLAND â Itâs almost eerie how well Cumberland High struck the ball on Tuesday afternoon.
âWe hit it pretty well in our second game against Moses Brown, and in the Injury Fund (tilt) against Woonsocket, but Iâve never seen anything like this,â explained senior righty Justin Patrick after the Clippers clubbed 17 hits â including nine for extra bases â in a 14-0 thrashing of still-winless Smithfield High at Tucker Field.
Al Bettencourt lives in Burrillville, but his one-acre vegetable plot looks like itâs part of the Sonoran Desert.
âItâs all cracked,â says the executive director of the Rhode Island Farm Bureau. âItâs too dry. We need some rain and we need it soon.â
Across the region, a virtually snowless winter has given way to one of the driest springs on record, pushing the region to the edge of drought, raising concerns among farmers and prompting government agencies to issue fire hazard warnings.
