Navigant legion decks Collette Vacations

PAWTUCKET – Navigant Credit Union Post 85 found a way to cool off red-hot Collette Vacations Post 79.
The Woonsocket-based club seems to have caught a little fire, too.
Navigant went to work early against its Pawtucket foe on Wednesday night, scoring three runs in the top of the first. The bats kept going from there as Post 85 left Max Read Field with an 8-1 victory over Collette in Senior American Legion action.

Hottovy reflects on stint with Boston

PAWTUCKET -- Tommy Hottovy knew that this summer was going to be one of the most memorable times of his life.
He just didn’t expect that his summer would have included 24 days in June as a member of the Boston Red Sox.
The 29-year-old southpaw reliever, whose wife is expecting the couple’s first child next month, also received a ‘first’ earlier this month, when after pitching for nearly eight years in the minor leagues, he finally got the call only a select few players receive in their careers -- a promotion to the big leagues.

WOONSOCKET- Normand O. Lavoie 84, of Bourassa Ave., died Tuesday at home. He was the husband of the late Carolina (Pasquino) Lavoie.
Born in Woonsocket he was a son of the late Gedeon and Lumina (L'Abbee) Lavoie.
Mr. Lavoie was an automobile technician for MAC Buick for forty four years. He enjoyed cars, boating and traveling.

Cumberland names school chief

CUMBERLAND — The School Committee voted Tuesday night to select North Kingstown School Superintendent Phillip Thornton for its vacant superintendent position.
Thornton will be offered a salary of $150,000, nearly $3,000 more than his current salary.
When asked for comment following Tuesday evening's North Kingstown School Committee meeting, Thornton told the North Kingstown Standard Times he needed more time to process the news and talk it over with his family before he could comment, one way or another, on when he might be ready to make a decision.

Fireworks stands popping up everywhere

WOONSOCKET — It used to take a trip to New Hampshire or some other state if a Rhode Islander wanted to legally buy fireworks for the Fourth of July.
Not anymore.
Thanks to the state’s approval of a fireworks sales law last year, you don’t have to go any farther than the Diamond Hill Road business district to pick up legal Fourth of July firework display products.

Cumberland American blasts Cumberland National

CUMBERLAND — There was a lot of talk last year that the upcoming Cumberland American All-Star team had potential to be something special this season, especially after the latest batch captured the state title for 11-year-olds.
Two games into the District 4 Major Division Tournament, Cumberland American is proving it just may have what it takes to advance far this summer.

CUMBERLAND- Gracia Constantineau, 84, of Mendon Rd. Cumberland, died Monday evening at Oakland Grove Health Care Center in Woonsocket.
Born in Manville, she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Marie (Dumas) Fournier. She was raised in Manville and resided in Woonsocket for many years before moving to Cumberland in 1993.
Mrs. Constantineau was employed at Texas Instruments in Attleboro for over 37 years before retiring in 1993.

BLACKSTONE- Jill Ann Considine, 38, formerly of Blackstone, MA passed away Sunday at home in Candia, NH.
Born in Providence, she was the daughter of James and Kathleen (Madge) Considine of Candia, NH. She resided in Candia for the past 3 years, previously residing in California and Tennessee.
She was a graduate of the Blackstone-Millville Regional High School, Cass of 1991, and graduated from the Berkley College of Music.

WOONSOCKET- Hector "Tee" R. Lavallee 88, of Hebert Ave. died Tuesday at Miriam Hospital. He was the husband of Lucille (Malo) Masse Lavallee.
Born in Woonsocket, he was a son of the late Euclide and Clara (Rondeau) Lavallee.
He was a resident of Delray Beach, FL for fifty four years where he was the owner, operator of Air All Air Conditioning for forty years. Mr. Lavallee was a paratrooper in the US Air Force during WWII.
