Woonsocket's Gardner returns to ring on Friday

WOONSOCKET — As glorious and magical as last year was for Joe Gardner in his comeback to boxing, this year has been the complete opposite.
First, the Woonsocket super middleweight was slated to fight in his first main event in March at The Roxy in Boston and defend the EBA (Eastern Boxing Association) New England light heavyweight championship that he won the previous November, but that show was abruptly cancelled.

Girls hockey preview: Mounties lead the way

There’s been only one perfect regular season in the nine-year existence of the RIIL’s girls’ hockey program, and that was turned in by Mount St. Charles in the sport’s 2002-03 inaugural season, as the Mounties produced an 8-0 mark and went on to win the first of their six state championships.
Since that season, the girls’ schedule has hovered between 14-18 games, and in the past eight seasons, there hasn’t been a team that’s been able to run the table and enjoy an undefeated regular season.

SANTA'S HELPERS

Li'l General Store, located on Winter Street in Woonsocket, will host its first open house to benefit the Milk Fund next Saturday, Dec. 10, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A raffle will be held as well as a visit from Santa Claus at noon. 2 arrested in beating of same man in Woonsocket and Milford

WOONSOCKET — Local police working in conjunction with police from Milford, Mass. arrested two city men on charges related to an alleged robbery and assault case said to have begun in the city on Sunday and continued later in Milford, according to Woonsocket Lt. Eugene Jalette, department spokesman.
Myles Mackenzie, 19, of 220 Village Road, was arrested on Tuesday after police were contacted by Milford Det. Jay Ball regarding the assault of a 24-year-old Milford man in that community, Jalette said.

Audit numbers to be unveiled Monday

WOONSOCKET — It appears city officials will have to wait until Monday's meeting of the City Council to get the bottom line of Fiscal Year 2011.
The city's auditing firm, Braver, PC, is still working with School Department Business Manager Stacey Busby on final accounting reports for the budget ending June 30, 2011, and hopes to have completed the documation work for an initial report on Monday, City Finance Director Thomas M. Bruce III said Thursday.

WOONSOCKET --- It’s been a very, very long time since Mount St. Charles lost its season opener in hockey, but that’s what happened to the Mounties on Friday night in its Division I opener with longtime rival La Salle.
Robert Fox netted a pair of power-play goals midway through the third period to lift the Rams to a 3-1 victory over the four-time defending state champions at Adelard Arena.

Woonsocket skaters open season with lopsided loss

WOONSOCKET — Woonsocket High has a new coach and a new outlook for the hockey season this winter.
Getting to the point where it can be competitive again with the teams in Division III, just may take a little time.
The Villa Novans began their league season Friday night against Cranston East. For more than two-thirds of the opening period, Woonsocket kept the Thunderbolts away from the net.
Then the floodgates opened up.

WOONSOCKET- Eileen M. Browchuck, 64, of Gaskill St. died Wednesday, November 30, 2011. She was the wife of Dennis Browchuk.
Born in Woonsocket, daughter of the late Richard W. Mulligan, and Barbara (Bardell) Mulligan, of Woonsocket.
Eileen worked as a Certified Professional Coder and also as a Medical Secretary for the former Surgical Group in Providence, for several years.
She was a member of the American Association of Professional Coders.

WOONSOCKET- Paul R. Reber 56, of Wood Ave. died November 26, 2011 at home.
He was born in Woonsocket a son of the late Rudi Gagnon and Rita (Desrosiers) Reber.
Paul was an independent flooring installer.
He is survived by three sons Paul, Justin and Joshua Reber, and a brother Thomas Reber of Woonsocket.

BURRILLVILLE- Claire V. Dominique 85, resident of Pascoag passed away December 2, 2011 at the Overlook Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
She was the wife of the late Philbert Dominique.
She was born February 14, 1926 in Oakland RI, a daughter to the late Henri & Alma (Rondeau) Rivet.
Claire worked in area textiles. She was a lifelong Burrillville resident.
