LINCOLN — You know Linda Oliveira is sincere and serious when she says she loves her massive, long-haired German shepherd Smokey, and has since she first gave him a home at seven weeks.
Still, about the time he turned 10 months old, Oliveira — the owner of Sunset Stables at Lincoln Woods State Park — became worried. Whenever she walked him on nearby trails, he would become overly belligerent with his own kind.
NORTH SMITHFIELD — After considering the number of different groups focused on school athletics and the potential for violations, the school district has made the decision to have one “club” as its only athletic program support organization.
At a recent North Smithfield School Committee meeting, the Northmen Athletic Club (NAC) was named as the one and only official athletic program “support” booster group for North Smithfield athletics
NORTH SMITHFIELD - Walmart will close its Woonsocket store on Diamond Hill Road on Tuesday, Sept. 13, one day before the retail giant opens its larger store in North Smithfield at Dowling Village, about five miles away.
Walmart took formal possession of the North Smithfield building at Dowling Village on Aug. 8. The new store, located at 7 Eddie Dowling Highway, plans to open to shoppers at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Following Friday’s opening Little League World Series loss, Cumberland American manager Dave Belisle promised his team would play better Saturday against home-town favorite Clinton County, Pa.
He was right. But it was not enough to save Cumberland’s historic season.
Christopher Wright pitched 4 2/3 brilliant innings of six-hit baseball and repeatedly threw well under pressure Saturday night at Lamade Stadium, but Pennsylvania pitcher Alex Garbrick and Tyler McCloskey stymied Cumberland, combining on a three-hit as Cumberland lost, 2-0.
When the wave of transactions swept through Gillette Stadium at the start of training camp, two names expectedly stood out among the rest.
Albert Haynesworth and Chad Ochocinco.
The former, no stranger to controversy on and off the field, has not practiced since Aug. 4 because of an undisclosed injury. The latter, his first-quarter touchdown in the Patriots’ 31-14 preseason win over the Buccaneers on Thursday notwithstanding, continues to build a rapport with Tom Brady.
I foresee another New England newcomer having a more immediate impact than both Haynesworth and Ochocinco.
PROVIDENCE — As decision day looms for RIPTA, the state’s public transit authority, to implement massive service cuts that would eliminate at least part of 39 of its 54 bus routes, protests are escalating in from riders and public officials alike.
Pawtucket is one of the hardest hit areas, with several routes reduced or eliminated altogether, and Burrillville and Glocester residents face losing an important transportation link to the central part of the state, many of whom use it to get back and forth from work or school.
Dan Glod, Chris Dugas and Brian Belisle (front, L-R), and Ryan Cannata, Mike Cannata, Dave Rosa and Conor Fleurant (back, L-R), all New England fans, whoop it up as they cheer on the Cumberland American team at the start of the World Series game Friday against Huntington Beach, California at Lamade Stadium in Williamsport, Pa. The locals lost Game 1 11-0 and play again Saturday night.
WOONSOCKET – Krystal Durkin’s mother, Cheryl Durkin, went to the Police Station looking for answers Thursday evening.
She had spent the early morning hours of Thursday at Rhode Island Hospital watching as the medical staff tried to save her 25-year-old daughter’s life. Krystal, the mother of an infant daughter, Lillianne Fay, had been struck by a car while walking across Mendon Road just after 11:45 p.m. Wednesday. She suffered severe head injuries when struck and thrown a distance down the road.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — The Cumberland American Little League all-stars have made comebacks a summer-long staple.
Now they hope to stage their best comeback yet.
Braydon Salzman, Nick Pratto and Ryo Takada combined on a three-hit shutout and the offense produced up and down the lineup as California blanked Cumberland, 11-0 Friday at Lamade Stadium in Cumberland’s Little League World Series debut. The West champions, unbeaten this summer, move into Sunday’s winner bracket to meet either Clinton County, Pa. or La Grange, Ken.
PAWTUCKET — The PawSox locker room has looked like a bus station this week, with players coming down I-95 from Portland or heading to Boston.
Friday’s transit report led with the news of third baseman Will Middlebrooks’s promotion to Pawtucket from Portland. Middlebrooks effectively replaces Ryan Lavarnway, who joined Boston’s lineup on Thursday.
