Drug raid is no blast for suspect

WOONSOCKET – For Neftali Melendez, Wednesday started with a bang, but it went downhill from there.
Melendez was startled awake about an hour before dawn by the sound of an explosive device blowing apart the door of his first-floor apartment at 196-202 Fourth Ave., police said.
Melendez, 25, now held at the ACI on drug charges, had been the target of an undercover narcotics operation for weeks, said Detective Lt. Eugene Jalette.

Mount shines in soccer opener

CRANSTON – Mount St. Charles Academy saw 14 seniors, most of them starters, graduate from last year’s playoff team that finished second in Division II-North.
With a new batch of talented upperclassmen mixed in with some quality underclassmen, MSC head coach Miles Henderson was cautiously optimistic on how his squad would fare for the upcoming fall season.
After the first few weeks of practice, that confidence level increased a notch or two.

BURRILLVILLE - Wilfred P. Normandin, 84, died Monday, August 29, 2011 at his home in Pascoag. He was the husband of Nancy-Hope (Round) Normandin whom he was married to for 44 years.
Born in Pascoag, he was the son the late Wilfred A. and Eva (Jacques) Normandin.

WOONSOCKET- Normand P. "Sonny" Phaneuf 85 of Thibeault Ave died Tuesday August 30,2011 at the VA Medical Center in Providence. He was the son of the late Malvina (Paquin) Phaneuf and Joseph Phaneuf.
He is survived by his wife Clarice "Candy" Courtemanche, a son Marc J. Phaneuf and his wife Louise of Pascoag, a daughter Celeste Bedigian and her husband Peter of Uxbridge and a sister Rita Kingsley of Taunton. He also leaves three grandchildren; Katherine Stapp, Angela and Matthew Bedigian.
Norm was a lifelong Woonsocket resident.

PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ.- Lawrence E. Colerick, 82, of Prescott Valley, Ariz., died Monday, Aug. 8, 2011.
He was born May 22, 1929, in Rhode Island to Edwin C. and Charlotte A. Colerick.
Mr. Colerick enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1950 and served as an EM2 during the Korean War until 1954. He graduated from Boston University in 1958 and worked for American Cyanamid until 1970. He was then affiliated with Oxirane Corp., subsidiary of Atlantic Richfield Co., as midwestern regional manager until he retired in 1985.

Cumberland football team prepares for season

CUMBERLAND — The Blackstone Valley area will be well represented on Friday night at Tucker Field with four local squads participating in a trio of Injury Fund tilts.
The two-quarter, non-league games, which begin at 6 p.m., kicks off with Central Falls battling Shea, followed by last year’s Division II state runner-up Tolman facing Cumberland at 7 p.m.
While tomorrow night’s game means nothing in the standings, Cumberland coach Chris Skurka will be eager to see how his club fares against the Tigers.

Shawn M. Nassaney 5K is Sept. 10 at Bryant

SMITHFIELD — Save for the inaugural event in 2001, the Shawn M. Nassaney Memorial Cross-Country Race/Walk has consistently drawn an average of 500 participants each year.
The potential is there for possibly double that amount on Sept. 10 when the 11th annual event takes place at the Bryant University campus.

Much of Blackstone still without power

BLACKSTONE — Main Street in this village-like outpost on the state line usually has everything a busy mother of two needs, but lately it just hasn't been the same.
“You can't do anything in Blackstone,” said Tara Rogala as she pulled up to the drive-through at Dean Bank. “You can't do laundry. You can't do groceries. I have to drive 20 minutes to Woonsocket to do anything. Not having power with two small kids isn't easy.”

ALBION- Clemence A. Bolduc, 84, formerly of School St., Albion, died Wednesday surrounded by her family at Bayberry Commons in Pascoag.
Born in Albion, she was a daughter of the late Francois and Zenaide (Descoteaux) Forest. She was a lifelong resident of Albion.
Mrs. Bolduc was employed at American Tourister in Albion and previously worked at Berkshire-Hathaway as well as several other area mills.
Clemence was a lifelong communicant of St. Ambrose Parish.

LINCOLN- Kevin K. Coleman, 89, of Old River Rd., Lincoln, died Wednesday, August 31, 2011 in Cortland Place, Smithfield. He was the husband of Mona J. (Kelly) Coleman whom he married June 15, 1946.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Louis and Mary (McDonnell) Coleman.
