Gloria N. Pontbriand

HARTLAND, WI- Gloria N. Pontbriand passed away May 21, 2011 at the age of 71.
She was the loving mother of Linda (Doug) Pontbriand-Johnson and grandmother to Erika, Mark and Aaron Johnson. She was preceded in death by her brother Robert Rochefort.
A Celebration of Gloria's Life will be held July 2, 2011 from 2-6 pm at Box Seats Family Restaurant, 332 Famum Pike, Smithfield, RI.

Pension reform group assembles

PROVIDENCE — Rhode Island’s biggest pension problem is in the past.
Devising a plan to take care of the retirement needs of current and future state employees is a relatively simple, do-able and affordable matter. It is filling in the massive hole of unfunded pension liability — estimated at somewhere between $7 billion and $9 billion — that the state’s elected officials have been digging over the last several decades that is going to take back-breaking work and bank-breaking amounts of money.

District IV Little League race hard to call

In 2009, Lincoln captured the District IV and State All-Star Tournaments and then came one win away from Williamsport, Pa. for the Little League World Series after an 11-7 loss to Peabody (Mass.) Western in the New England Region finals.
Last year it was a talented bunch of players from Cumberland National that made the headlines with a nearly identical route of its neighbor. CNLL dominated its foes during the districts, did the same in the state tourney and then fell a run short, a 1-0 setback to Fairfield (Conn.) American in the title game, for a trip to the World Series.

Pawtucket boxer heading to Olympic Trials

PAWTUCKET --- Toka Kahn-Clary is on the doorstep of a berth on the 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team.
The 19-year-old Pawtucket fighter sewed up one of the eight spots in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials by copping a silver medal at the USA Boxing National Championships late last week at the Olympic Training Center’s Sports Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Competing in a competitive 132-pound division, Kahn-Clary needed just two victories to clinch a berth in the Team Trials, which will be held from July 31-Aug. 6 at the Mobile Civic Center in Mobile, Ala.

WOONSOCKET- Jeannette T. Berard, 78, of Woonsocket, formerly of Follett St., North Smithfield, died Monday at Landmark Medical Center. She was the wife of the late Lionel Berard.
Born and raised in Manville, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Philomena (Desjardins) Paul. She moved to Woonsocket after her marriage and later resided in North Smithfield. She returned several years ago to Woonsocket.
Mrs. Berard was employed by AT Cross for many years before retiring in 1993.

Wife of the late William C. Holubesko.
Born Jan. 21, 1927 in Central Falls, a daughter of the late Paul & Mary (Poliszezuk) Romanyszyn.

STUART, FL- ALBERT R. GAGNON, 75, died Sunday, June 26, 2011 at Martin Memorial Medical Center in Stuart.
Born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, Albert was a resident of Jensen Beach, FL for 8 years, coming from Millville, MA.
Before retiring, he worked at BJs Wholesale Club in Quality Control in Warehouse, MA.
Albert served during the Korean War in the United States Marine Corp.

WOONSOCKET- Eugene Dufault 86, of Morton St. died Thursday at Woonsocket Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born in Woonsocket a son of the late Wilfred and Clara (Rousseau) Dufault.
Mr. Dufault was a card tender for the former French Worsted Co. for many years. He was a WWII Army Air Force veteran, and an avid fisherman and hunter. Mr. Dufault loved to walk, and did so every day for the past thirteen years accompanied by his sister along the streets of Woonsocket.

Born in Danielson, CT, he was a son of the late Amidee and Mary Jane (Bouley) Lussier.
