MSC faces Lincoln in baseball showdown

April 10, 2011

WOONSOCKET — It’s a little early for Mount St. Charles to start circling the wagons.
The two-time defending Division II champions have played just one game in Division I this season, a 6-5 loss to Smithfield, and this afternoon they host powerful Lincoln High in a 4 p.m. game that could be an eye opener for the Mounties.
Lincoln, which has scored 10 runs in each of its first two league victories (over St. Raphael and Cumberland), is led by Ryan O’Dell and a strong nucleus of players who should take the Lions deep into the playoffs in early June.

Race Against Racism was a big success

April 10, 2011

WOONSOCKET — A perfect spring day, lots of participants and a helpful crew of volunteers made the YWCA’s inaugural Race Against Racism 5K race a home run Sunday morning.
U.S. Rep. David N. Cicilline, who was on hand to start the runners from River Island Park, praised the YWCA and its partners in the race for calling awareness to diversity in the city and Rhode Island as a whole with the event.
Mount St. Charles running coach and top Rhode Island racer Roland Lavallee placed first in the race with a time of 15:05, and Peggy Prosseda took the women’s title with a winning time of 22:25.

AHL great Mayer loves reminiscing about his playing days

April 10, 2011

LINCOLN – Marielle Mayer will have been married to Gilles Mayer – she calls him simply Gil – for 60 years on May 5, and she honestly can't recall her husband ever being so confident.
Better make that overconfident.
When their adult son, Andre, mentioned that his dad and former American Hockey League great Johnny Bower used to compete for Goalie of the Year honors, and that they still see each other at Rhode Island Reds Heritage Society events, a scribe asked the elder Mayer who won the laurel more often.
“He knew I was better, so he won't argue,” Gilles grinned.

This house could be yours for $100,000 -- and some luck

April 9, 2011

WOONSOCKET – It'll take not just a decent credit score but a bit of luck to claim the keys to this house. But for whomever can put the two together, it really will be like hitting the jackpot.
Worth $140,000, the three-decker at 41 Bennett St. will be sold by the owner – the City of Woonsocket – for just $100,000. But with three units, the house is easily capable of generating enough rental income to cover the mortgage and put some money aside.
The city plans to sell the house by lottery to eligible applicants on June 1.

Gov't shutdown averted, but it was a waiting game Friday night in R.I.

April 9, 2011

(With reports from the AP)
PROVIDENCE – A last minute budget deal, forged amid bluster and tough bargaining, averted an embarrassing federal shutdown and cut billions in spending — the first major test of the divided government voters ushered in five months ago.

Okajima focusing on his job in Pawtucket

April 8, 2011

PAWTUCKET – Nary a trace of resentment could be found in Hideki Okajima’s tone when asked if he felt he was bypassed by the Red Sox on Friday. Boston selected Felix Doubront – a pitcher who was shutdown during spring training with left forearm inflammation – to fill the club’s left-handed need in the bullpen after designating the ineffective Dennys Reyes for assignment.
“No,” was the straightforward answer Okajima came back with through interpreter Jeff Cutler after posed said question.

Mount softballers lose 1-0 game to Lincoln

April 8, 2011

LINCOLN -- This No. 9 batter delivered the No. 1 hit of her high school career on Friday afternoon.
Senior left fielder Marissa Walsh’s walkoff one-out single in the seventh inning delivered the run that gave Lincoln High a big 1-0 victory over Mount St. Charles Academy in their early showdown of Division I-North heavyweights at Saylesville Elementary School.
Walsh’s clutch hit settled a superb pitchers’ duel between the Lions’ Alyssa McCoart and the Mounties’ Olivia Hendricks and gave her team their second win of the young season.
