Mounties blank Moses Brown, 6-0

WOONSOCKET --- The rematch contained half as many goals and not as much drama as the first meeting, but it did give Mount St. Charles Academy something the team was unable to grab its first time out with Moses Brown.
A lopsided victory.
The Mounties produced three power-play goals and two shorthanded scores and put a firm grasp on their lead in the Division I standings on Friday night by skating to an impressive 6-0 win over second-place Moses Brown before a large gathering at Adelard Arena.

Woonsocket takes third in Class A meet

PROVIDENCE – Neighboring rivals Woonsocket and Cumberland were among the top six teams in Friday’s heavily-competitive Class A Championship, held at the Providence Athletic Facility..
Bishop Hendricken won its 18th consecutive title with 137 points. Woonsocket was third with 48 and Cumberland placed sixth with 30.
The Villa Novans claimed two victories in the meet with Jalen Evans winning the 300-meter dash with a time of 37.4 seconds and Jessie Charette taking the long jump with a distance of 21 feet, 9 inches, nearly a foot longer than his previous best.

Justin Cote

NORTH SMITHFIELD- Justin "Juice" Cote 85 formerly of 1303 Eddie Dowling Hwy, died Thursday in St. Antoine Residence. He was the husband of Marie (Rainville) Cote.
Mr. Cote was born in Canada a son of the late Edmond and Amanda (Patrie) Cote.
He was a pile driver for Franki Foundation in Woburn, MA for thirty years before retiring in 1987. Mr. Cote was a WWII Navy veteran serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and enjoyed riding his motorcycle throughout the back roads of RI and CT.

SMITHFIELD- Marc P. Mandeville, 42, of Homestead Rd, Smithfield, died suddenly on Sunday, February 6, 2011.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of Judy A. (Millette) Mandeville of Woonsocket and the late Lucien P. Mandeville.
He worked as an automobile mechanic for Semper Fi Auto.
Besides his mother he is survived by a daughter, Marissa Mandeville of No. Smithfield and two brothers, Lucien Mandeville of Harrisville and Jody Mandeville of Grand Junction, CO.

City slightly up on Fitch's financial scorecard

WOONSOCKET – Although it left unchanged the city's BBB- bond rating, Fitch Ratings yesterday upgraded the city's long-term fiscal outlook from negative to stable, a move officials hailed as another sign that the city's financial health is slowly but steadily improving.

Mixed martial arts event coming to Twin River

LINCOLN --- The Blackstone Valley will certainly make its presence felt at Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc.’s next mixed martial arts show.
Five local fighters, three from Pawtucket and two from Woonsocket, will be featured on the undercard of an action-packed “Rhode Rage” show on Friday, Feb. 25, at the Twin River Event Center.
This will be CES’s third MMA card in Rhode Island, and while its inaugural “First Blood” show last Sept. 17 and “Snow Brawl’ event on Dec. 2 at Twin River were smashing successes, “Rhode Rage” could top them both.

WOONSOCKET- Janet S. (Sanford) Forbes, 81, of Prospect St., died Wednesday, February 9, 2011 in the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. She was the wife of the late James M. Forbes.
Born in Potsdam, NY, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Jessie (Clark) Sanford.
Mrs. Forbes graduated from Russell Sage College in Troy, NY and SUNY, Plattsburgh, NY. She was a high school economics teacher, a church choir director and soloist, and an accomplished quilter.

WOONSOCKET- Robert H. Clark, 91, passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2011 in the Oakland Grove Health Center.
His beloved wife of 60 years, Genevieve (Padden) Clark, died in 2006.
He leaves three sons, Richard and his wife Paula of Dudley, MA, Robert and his companion Patz Hoffman of Woonsocket, and Randall and his wife Joanne of Burrillville. He is also survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

WOONSOCKET- Demetre "Jimmy" Zervas, 79, of Winter St., died Feb., 9, 2011 at the Landmark Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of Petrula (Papadopoulos) Zervas.
Born July 17, 1931 in Veria, Greece, a son of the late Lambri and Polixeni (Chiara) Zerva.
He worked in the maintenance and construction department for Cumberland Farms for several years. He was an avid gardener.
