CUMBERLAND â A local woman died Friday morning after she and another woman were struck by a car while walking on the sidewalk along Mendon Road.
Kathleen Carpenter, 54, a married mother of two children, sustained fatal injuries in the accident and Judy Waterman, 53, also of Cumberland, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Cumberland Police Chief John R. Desmarais said the two women were out walking together at 6:30 a.m. as part of their regular morning routine when they were struck by a 1995 Buick sedan operated by Casey Rondeau, 26, of Woonsocket.
WOONSOCKET â Just as adversity is said to produce great art, great students, too, can emerge from the most challenging academic circumstances.
And so it is with Woonsocket High School's class of 2011.
Despite facing some of the toughest graduation requirements with fewer resources than ever â or perhaps because of it â this year's crop of graduates is especially fine-tuned for the challenges of the future.

SLATERSVILLE- John Baptiste R. Martin 82, of Church St. died Thursday at home surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was the husband of Martha (Nordby) Martin. John and Martha would have celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary, June 30, 2011.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Lionel and Bertha (Boss) Martin.
He worked as a laborer for Ramco Co. before becoming disabled in 1977. John enjoyed fishing, was an avid gardener and loved to tease.
Doris T. Lamontagne
WOONSOCKET- Doris T. (Therien) Lamontagne 84, of MacArthur Rd, died Tuesday in the Oakland Grove Health Center. She was the wife of the late George Lamontagne.
She was born in Woonsocket, a daughter of the late Aime and Lydia (Pelletier) Therien.
Mrs. Lamontagne was a seamstress and floor manager for the former Finklestein's Co and was a supervisor for the Woonsocket Suit and Coat Co., retiring in 1981.
Just shy of his teenage years, Brendan Doyle remembers being at a few of the water stops along the course of the 1990 Ocean State Marathon.
His older brother Patrick was there, too.
Earlier in their lives they were two young to really witness the impact that their father had at the 26.2-mile race that traversed over the Newport streets. On this day, though, it was different.
First-hand, the oldest sons of the late Bobby Doyle, got to see their dad in action.
WOONSOCKET â Julie Briere had an experience early in her life that is now directing what she will do next as the top student of Woonsocket High Schoolâs Class of 2011.
Briere, Class Valedictorian, will join Jennifer Pierel, Class Salutatorian for 2011, in speaking at the schoolâs graduation ceremonies Friday afternoon at Barry Field, weather permitting.
Although planning to talk about her experiences as a student at the high school, Briere said this week it was her parents, Linda and Brian Briere, and her brother, Jared, 11, who played the biggest roles in her scholarly success.
LINCOLN â As Max, an orphaned pit bull, used his teeth to rip bark from a tree just outside the Wellington Road shelter, Animal Control Officer Louann Noreau laughed, then uttered, âI think he was a logger in his past life.
âYou know, he just loves anything to do with trees,â she stated early Tuesday afternoon. âHe'll climb them, swing from tree branches. If there's a tire swing around, he'll jump through the tire and swing his legs to gain momentum. He's just like a little boy.
Eugene B. Neas Jr.
LINCOLN- Eugene B. Neas, Jr. 84, of Wake Robin Rd., Lincoln, died Wednesday, June 16, 2011 in the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. He was the husband of Patricia A. (Maguire) Neas whom he married September 25, 1980 and the late Mary (Sparrow) Neas.
Born in Arlington, MA, he was the son of the late Eugene B. and Catherine (Coleman) Neas.
Albert Joseph Petrin Jr.
DOWNINGTOWN, PA- Petrin, Albert Joseph, Jr. (Junior), 77, of Downingtown, PA passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2011.
Born in Woonsocket, RI, September 3, 1933, Al is survived by his wife, Donna; brother Paul (Judi); He was preceded by his sister, Suzanne; father, Albert; mother, Denise; children, Peter and Marianne; and great-granddaughter, Maggie.
His retirement years were filled with happiness busing "his kids" to and from school.
BURLINGTON, VT- Laure-Abel (Moreau) McNamee, 92, of Shelburne, VT, died Monday, February 7, 2011, at The Arbors in Shelburne
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 11AM in St. Charles Church, 190 No. Main St., Woonsocket. Burial will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket.
