Bell theft takes toll on owner

January 25, 2011

BLACKSTONE — There was so much snow that Kevin Mahoney didn't notice the item missing from his driveway — at least not until he started to plow.
It was then that Mahoney realized the bell was gone — not just any bell, but a Hooper, a rare piece of 19th century metalsmithing forged into shape by a protege of Paul Revere.
Weighing around 700 pounds, the bronze bell had been severed from a secured length of heavy-duty, steel chain, perhaps with a pair of bolt cutters, around Dec. 16, says Mahoney, of 239 Elm St.

Woonsocket cagers come up short

January 24, 2011

PAWTUCKET – There were coaches from North Kingstown and Bishop Hendricken sitting in the stands to view Monday’s Division I crossover between Woonsocket and St. Raphael. No doubt they came to see Charles Correa, Cesar Mejia and Trevor Vasey and the rest of SRA’s starting five, but the coaches were probably just as likely to jot down notes pertaining to Jordan Peguero, Ben Pillsbury and Franklin Batista.

Big voice in a little package

January 24, 2011

LINCOLN — Brian McKinnon readily admits it's a strange way to discover a child's talent for vocals, but that's just what happened in the family's bathroom one night back in January 2003.
He decided to give his then-two-year-old daughter, Alexis Clare, a bath one night, and – as always – he turned on the radio to amuse her, maybe keep her mind off soap in her eyes.

January 24, 2011

Mixed martial arts or boxing?
That has been the million dollar question surrounding Andre Soukhamthath these days. Should the talented amateur pursue a pro career in MMA, where he’s 4-0 with two big title fights on deck, or should he try to make a living in boxing, where he’s 4-2 and last October, captured a championship belt at the Rocky Marciano Tournament?
