Nasuti: Woonsocket football rumor an 'outright lie'

December 6, 2010

WOONSOCKET — Athletic director George Nasuti is proud of every Woonsocket High varsity team, not just the ones that win state championships. But he does take special pride in the football program’s two consecutive Division II state championships.
“Woonsocket has been a basketball community recently,” Nasuti was saying on Monday afternoon. “Our girls team won two straight state titles. The boys went to the state finals in 2008. Those teams really had the community behind them. I think the football team is getting a lot of support from the community, too.”

PROVIDENCE – The stars of the new ABC show Body of Proof, being filmed entirely in the Ocean State, are most impressed with Rhode Island’s beauty and the ease of getting from one place to another. The executive producer seemed most taken with the state’s film and television tax credits.

Woonsocket defends Division II Super Bowl title, tops Tolman

December 5, 2010

CRANSTON — Woonsocket High head coach Carnell Henderson has been telling anyone who would listen that football season is a journey that often lasts from August until early December.
“Our kids came a long way from the first game we played Tolman back in September,” Henderson said on Sunday afternoon following the Villa Novans’ 28-14 victory over the Tigers in the Division II Super Bowl at Cranston Stadium. “We didn’t capitalize on some things in the first game (a 6-0 Tolman victory). But that was early in the season. We showed how far we have come today.”

Hill, Paronto give BoSox acquisition Gonzalez high marks

December 5, 2010

PAWTUCKET — Looks like the American League has a new big bopper to lose sleep over. Yet as teams start assembling scouting reports on newly-minted Red Sox acquisition Adrian Gonzalez, perhaps they would be wise to consult pitchers Rich Hill and Chad Paronto, both of whom toiled for Pawtucket last season.

Mount smokes Smithfield, 11-0

December 4, 2010

SMITHFIELD – After two games of the young season, Mount St. Charles has outscored its opponents by a 21-0 margin.
“We’ve got some firepower,” Mount coach Dave Belisle admitted after the Mounties blanked Smithfield 11-0 on Saturday night. “We have a great first line. But what we’ve also found out is this team has a lot of depth.”
The usual suspects did most of the early scoring for Mount. Zach Samborsky, Brian Campbell and Trevor Plante got their goals, although Plante netted just one after scoring seven in Friday’s 10-0 romp over Barrington.

Young Friars torch Rams, 87-74

December 4, 2010

PROVIDENCE – If this was a boxing match, a good referee would have intervened and stopped the proceedings before things got too out of hand. It was a total mismatch right from the opening tap.
Providence College was much better than the University of Rhode Island yesterday. The Friars dominated in coasting to an impressive 87-74 triumph over the Rams before a sellout crowd of 12,410 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. PC led by a dozen in the first half before going up as many as 17 points late in the game.

Winning really is the only thing that matters today

December 4, 2010

“Winning isn’t everything … it’s the only thing.”
***
Most people attribute this quote to legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi. Actually, Vince borrowed it from a former UCLA football coach named Red Sanders. Its true meaning is hard to miss. Winning is the only thing that matters.
