LINCOLN – After weeks of pondering his baseball future, Nick Zammarelli decided late Wednesday night that he is heading to Elon University.

The recent Lincoln High graduate made up his mind on the same night that Boston Red Sox scouts Ray Fagnant and Quincy Boyd were on hand to see Zammarelli take batting practice at North Providence High School and in Westerly as North Providence Post 29 took on Gordon Greene Post 27 in R.I. American Legion action.

PAWTUCKET – Just because Will Middlebrooks is now taking up residence in the PawSox’ clubhouse doesn’t mean that the Xander-Bogaerts-to-third-base experiment has been relegated to the back burner.

PAWTUCKET – There’s a ripple effect to the Red Sox placing David Ross on the 60-day disabled list. Concussion issues continue to plague the backup catcher, his up-in-the-air status for the balance of the season paving the way for Ryan Lavarnway to stick with the major-league team for the foreseeable future.

PAWTUCKET – “I’ll keep it short. He’s really good. In all phases.”
Clearly, the scout that spoke about Xander Bogaerts is a big-time admirer, the former basing his opinion on what he saw when the latter was in Double-A Portland earlier this season. The Red Sox echoed the scout’s sentiment when they officially promoted the 20-year-old to Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday.

PAWTUCKET – From the walk he was able to work after falling behind 0-2 to going the other way for a three-run home run, there was plenty to like regarding Will Middlebrooks’ second rehab game with the Pawtucket Red Sox on Wednesday night.
Playing seven innings, Middlebrooks went 2-for-3 with five RBI in Pawtucket’s come-from-behind 7-4 triumph against Charlotte. On the disabled list with a lower back strain, the third baseman confirmed following the game that he plans to play all nine innings of Thursday’s contest.

PAWTUCKET – Some PawSox notes to pass along as the locals close out an eight-game homestand with a matinee against Indianapolis.

-- Tuesday’s starter was supposed to be Rubby De La Rosa, but those plans were scrapped after the hard-throwing Pawtucket pitcher tweaked a muscle in his side while throwing on flat ground on Monday.
“Better safe than sorry with him,” said manager Gary DiSarcina. “It’s nothing to get concerned about. He came in (Tuesday) and said he felt better.”
