High school boys hockey | Mounties face early-season test vs. Hendricken

December 19, 2014

WOONSOCKET – Mount St. Charles coach Dave Belisle doesn’t want to sound the alarm, but also won’t deny the importance of Friday’s matchup with longtime rival Bishop Hendricken at Warwick’s Thayer Arena.

“They’re all big games, but December games are just as important,” said Belisle.

Keeping pace in head-to-head matchups will be essential for the Mounties to make noise in the Championship Division race. To date, Mount and Hendricken have each lost to currently unbeaten La Salle Academy.

PROVIDENCE  –  Despite Burrillville High’s 47-31 Division II/A-B crossover loss to Hope on Thursday night, head coach Justin Switzer admitted he saw some positives from his rather young squad.

He carries just one senior, and his roster is sprinkled with six freshmen and a sophomore, but the experience is beginning to show.

Canavan finds midseason form early as Clippers roll to opening victory

December 16, 2014

CUMBERLAND — Junior tri-captain Kayleigh Canavan expected to swim rather well in Cumberland High’s Division I season opener against Smithfield on Tuesday afternoon, but what she accomplished, frankly, threw her for a loop.

Canavan not only manufactured two of her best times ever while capturing the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke, but she also mustered a superb 50 breaststroke leg in the 200 medley relay to pace her Clippers to an easier-than-expected 55-38 triumph over the Sentinels at the Aquatic Center.

Boys' basketball: Lincoln’s big finish overcomes NS

December 15, 2014

NORTH SMITHFIELD — After playing horribly at the tail end of the initial half and the first part of the second, Lincoln High manufactured an 19-3 flurry over the final 7:29 to edge North Smithfield, 49-45, in a R.I. Injury Fund opener on Monday night.

Thanks to senior tri-captain Devon Deragon’s pretty fast-break lay-in at that juncture of the game, the Northmen seemed destined to reign with a 42-30 cushion. But the Lions took advantage of several miscues by the hosts to move to 1-0.

December 12, 2014

SMITHFIELD  –  Sophomore Joe Sanchioni manufactured two goals and Tim Casilli a tally and two feeds as Mount St. Charles rolled past Smithfield, 4-2, in a Championship Division/Cimini League showdown on Friday night.

Sanchioni’s final goal, with 5:29 remaining, provided insurance for the Mounties (2-0-0), though senior Pat Holmes’ score on feeds from Casilli and Justin D’Abrosca with just 2:55 elapsed in the middle session proved to be the clincher.

Mike Macera and Jim Varin each scored for the Sentinels.

High school basketball | Novans run past Saints in Ciolfi's debut

December 12, 2014

PAWTUCKET – T.J. Ciolfi couldn’t have scripted his first game as Woonsocket’s head coach any better.

Buoyed by suffocating full-court press that paved the way for one easy transition basket after another, Woonsocket stormed past St. Raphael, 82-58, in semifinal-round action of the Dennis M. Lynch, Jr. Memorial Tournament on Thursday night. The Villa Novans placed six players in double figures with Elijah Vazquez (16 points, three 3-pointers) and Gary Lyles (15 points, 11-of-14 from the foul line) leading the charge.
