Mayer sisters fuel Lincoln's bid for second straight state softball crown

June 12, 2013

LINCOLN – It was pretty easy to see the frustration mounting inside Lincoln High senior righthander Lindsay Mayer during the R.I. Division I Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament winners' bracket final against always-gutsy Coventry on Saturday.
She'd fire a fastball, riseball or screwball, one she thought for sure would be called a strike at the belt or knees. Yet, when it wasn't, it would bug her to no end, as it would most All-State whirlers.

Mounties throw a scare at Oakers before falling in Div. I volleyball playoffs

June 11, 2013

PROVIDENCE — Less than two months ago, Coventry dealt Mount St. Charles its most agonizing loss of the regular season. On Tuesday night, the Oakers handed the Mounties the defeat that hurt them the most – the one that ousted them from the Division I playoffs.
The unbeaten Oakers rebounded from an opening-set loss and moved one win away from their first state championship since 1995 by rolling to a 3-1 triumph over the Mounties in their semifinal-round clash at the Providence Career & Technical Academy field house.

Central ends Northmen's season with 3-0 semifinal win

June 10, 2013

PROVIDENCE – Way back on April 23, North Smithfield High trekked to the Providence Career & Technical Academy field house to take on league-leading Central in a Division II crossover bout.

The Northmen held their own against the superb Knights, but bused home on the down side of a 3-1 verdict.

Still, the way North Smithfield battled in that 25-18, 25-14, 22-25, 25-14 defeat wasn't lost on Central head coach Donn Chu, who had warned his players prior to Monday night's R.I. Division II Tournament semifinal that their opponent would be dangerous, especially given its size advantage.

Decision looming for Lincoln baseball star Zammarelli

June 9, 2013

Lincoln High senior Nick Zammarelli has been presented with two envelopes. One is marked “college” – as in the opportunity to play Division I baseball at Elon (N.C.) University. The second envelope is labeled “pros” – as in an invitation to sign a professional contract with the Boston Red Sox, the team that selected him in the 28th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Zammarelli proud to share Red Sox draft moment with Lincoln '9'

June 8, 2013

NORTH KINGSTOWN — Perhaps it’s fitting that Lincoln High senior Nick Zammarelli got to share his special moment – that of getting selected by the hometown Boston Red Sox in the 28th round of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player draft, No. 833 overall – with his teammates and coaches.

After all, both groups were generous with their support and encouragement through every twist and turn of his career.

Life-long bond inspires ‘Death Racers’

LINCOLN – Andy Souvalian had been trying to complete his usual business as an assistant administrator at Amica Insurance Co. headquarters on the afternoon of Monday, April 15 when he heard the horrifying news, that someone had exploded two bombs at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

His immediate thought: “Oh, no! How's Roup?”

His best friend, Rhode Island State Police Trooper Roupen Bastajian of Greenville, had been running in the grueling 26.2-mile race from Hopkinton to Copley Square, and he wondered if his pal had suffered any injuries.

With regards to MLB Draft, Zammarelli family hopes good things are in store for son Nick

June 6, 2013

LINCOLN – In a spring season that has seen their son operate in a fishbowl and subjected to seemingly never-ending interactions with pro baseball scouts, Nick Zammarelli Jr. and wife Lisa have been with Lincoln High senior standout Nick III every step of the way.
The journey leading up to Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft has been part eye-opener, part draining ordeal. Frequently, the player's dad has been forced to deal with endless questions from talent evaluators, all of them clamoring to know about Nick and what his future plans may entail.

Once again, Cumberland comes up short against Moses Brown

June 6, 2013

PROVIDENCE — For the second time in less than a week, Moses Brown dealt Cumberland a difficult one-run defeat.
Unfortunately for the Clippers, Thursday afternoon’s 3-2 loss at the Quakers’ McCulloch Field proved to be a lot tougher to swallow – it eliminated them from the Division I playoffs.
A two-out infield miscue by the Clippers in the home half of the fifth inning allowed the host Quakers to score the run that broke a 2-2 tie and lifted them to a 3-2 victory and a chance to play another day in the tournament.

NORTH SMITHFIELD – Assistant coach Paul Mercier put it best after North Smithfield High pulled off an amazing, come-from-behind 3-2 triumph over West Warwick on Thursday afternoon: “The girls were a whole lot happier today than they were 24 hours ago. It was a really quiet ride home.”

WOONSOCKET — If Mount St. Charles planned to overcome a tough opponent and earn a spot in next Tuesday night’s Division I semifinals, the Mounties were going to have to do something they hadn’t done during the regular season.
Win a five-set match.
After going 0-for-3 in matches that were decided by 3-2 scores, the Mounties were able to cap a two-hour thriller with visiting North Kingstown on Wednesday afternoon with an impressive 15-12 victory in their quarterfinal-round matchup.
