Knotty Oakers chop down volleyball Mounties

WOONSOCKET — As soon as the final point fell to the floor, spelling Mount St. Charles’ 3-1 Division I crossover loss to Coventry High on Wednesday night, head coach Josh D’Abate led his kids to the other side of the gymnasium, beyond the canvas divider, for a team meeting.

Naturally, it’s unknown what was said, as it should be, but if D’Abate’s demeanor upon return was any indication, it couldn’t have been that bad.

Red Sox minor-league coach Fox recalls Jeter's rise to top

September 28, 2014

Long before the multiple championships, the myriad of individual achievements and a celebrity crossover status that he so desperately tried to conceal, Derek Jeter kept “a razor-thin focus on things” according to Andy Fox, presently the Red Sox minor-league fielding coordinator and a former teammate of Jeter.

“For someone who was 18 at the time, he continually went about his business and it was impressive to see at that age,” Fox said.  “Who knows how it was going to end up, but he had the determination to get better.”

Unbeaten Burrillville buries co-op foe 48-26; Northmen bounce back from loss with 40-6 win

September 27, 2014

EAST PROVIDENCE – Perhaps is was Gennaro Ferraro’s intention to deliver a slice of humble pie to a Burrillville High bunch that had thoroughly manhandled the PCD/Wheeler Juanita Sanchez co-op squad on “Indian Summer” Saturday.

Calabro clobbers Townies in 28-0 Cumberland win, Oakley leaves Pilgrim in the dust in 31-0 Lions rout

Villa Novans putting their stamp on D-2 boys' soccer, notch sixth win

WOONSOCKET  –  There’s a rejuvenation in enthusiasm and spirit surrounding the Woonsocket High “futbolers” nowadays, and it’s easy to see why.
After wallowing in the depths of the Division I cellar over the past two-plus years – a pair of winless seasons head coach Anthony Rao, assistant Al Prestly and Co. would prefer to forget – there’s a new positive attitude being exuded.

Girls' Volleyball: Warriors battle for 3-1 victory over Broncos

September 26, 2014

CENTRAL FALLS — To understand how closely the teams from Central Falls and Burrillville highs battled in a Division II-North contest on Thursday night, consider this one statistic: Through four games, the foes combined for 12 lead changes and 18 ties.
Naturally, only one reigned, and it went to the inconsistent yet powerful Warriors, who survived an entertaining but grueling 3-1 triumph over the Broncos before close to 100 fans.

Sauveur reflects on successful tenure as PawSox pitching coach

September 25, 2014

PAWTUCKET – Despite being twice their age, Rich Sauveur has a lot in common with the numerous Triple-A pitchers who were entrusted to his care during his successful seven-year run as pitching coach for the Pawtucket Red Sox.

The 50-year-old hoped – make that yearned – for a job at the big-league level.

Football Broncos belt Tigers in Division IV opener

September 20, 2014

BURRILLVILLE  –  Perhaps the only thing that went wrong for Burrillville High on this cool-turned-sunny Saturday morning was this: Head coach Gennaro Ferraro's bunch scored so often, sophomore Tom Gieseke's PAT boots kept flying into the brush beyond the east end zone.

The Broncos – still reveling in a 32-26 victory over Division II foe East Greenwich in its non-league opener last week – opened their Division IV campaign in style after crushing Tiverton, 34-0, before an  Alumni Field crowd of over 300.
