'Old folks' Quigley-Inkster team share CVS lead

June 18, 2012

BARRINGTON — When 13-time LPGA Tour winner Juli Inkster discovered about two weeks ago that she would be paired with Champions Tour “Iron Man” Dana Quigley for the first round of the 14th annual CVS Caremark Charity Classic, she was ecstatic.
“I was really excited to be playing with Dana,” she said minutes after the two had mustered a birdie on the final hole on Monday afternoon. She then deadpanned, “I'm glad they put me with someone who can tolerate me for 18 holes.

The son becomes the father: Derwin and Mason Williams

June 16, 2012

What is the most important gift a father can give to his child?
If you answer unconditional love or a top-flight education, you’re right on target. What about providing a supportive and nurturing home life geared toward helping one’s offspring achieve their best? Can’t find fault with that, either.
Yet what if you were fortunate enough to have a father who could deliver on all those fronts and for good measure was a pro athlete? And what if you, his child, stood in a position where chasing after the identical great white whale of athletic prowess was not merely a possibility, but definite?

Soukhamthath delivers first-round TKO at Twin River

June 16, 2012

LINCOLN — For Andre Soukhamthath, Thursday afternoon’s frustration at the weigh-in was dwarfed by Friday night’s jubilation at the Twin River Event Center.
The Woonsocket bantamweight prospect delighted a strong gathering of local fans -- many of them sporting his new white ‘Asian Sensation’ fight t-shirt -- by notching the first knockout of his young career on the undercard of Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc’s “Proving Grounds” show.
Soukhamthath (now 2-1) spoiled the pro debut of Vinny Tisconie of Shrewsbury, Mass. by putting him away with a TKO just 2:06 into the fight.

N.S. gridders will appear in Capitol City All-Star Game

June 16, 2012

PROVIDENCE --- The recently-graduated seniors on the Central Falls and North Smithfield football teams put on their helmets and pads on Wednesday night and worked out together on the Northmen’s turf complex to prepare for one final game before officially turning the pages on their high school careers.
But if you’re thinking that final game they’re getting ready for is the 14th annual Governor’s Cup showdown – the one that pits Rhode Island’s top seniors against Connecticut’s finest 12th graders – on June 30 in Southington, Conn., think again.

Woonsocket’s Soukhamthath part of Friday's MMA event at Twin River

June 13, 2012

WOONSOCKET — Andre Soukhamthath just wrapped up a very productive camp at Tri-Force MMA in Pawtucket.
The 24-year-old Woonsocket bantamweight will be fighting for the first time under the Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc. banner, and he’s a handful of pounds away from making his weight for his upcoming fight.
Now if only he had a scouting report on his opponent.

Thanks to PawSox pitching coach, Bard’s arm, confidence on the rise

June 13, 2012

PAWTUCKET — From his dugout vantage point, Rich Sauveur saw something in Daniel Bard’s delivery that was fixable while the pitcher was toeing the rubber – providing that the PawSox pitching coach could grab the attention of catcher Ryan Lavarnway.

McGair: It's time to give Bard a definite path

June 11, 2012

Through all the video and bullpen sessions along with everything else geared toward the task of Reconstruction: The Daniel Bard Story, there’s one loose end left.
What exactly is Bard’s mound assignment moving forward – starter or reliever? Judging by the early returns in his minor-league stint with the PawSox, such a pretty important clarification appears to have been left off the struggling pitcher’s itinerary, the one that the Red Sox brain trust undoubtedly compiled and left atop Bard’s equipment bag as he packed up his Fenway Park locker.

Bard allows run in PawSox loss to Gwinnett; Cook's agent weighs in on pitcher's progress

June 11, 2012

PAWTUCKET – Daniel Bard got his wish Monday night. Unfortunately for the pitcher, the switch to the bullpen did little inspire confidence that he’s ready to turn the corner.
Working one inning, Bard allowed one run on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts as the PawSox saw a ninth-inning rally come up just short in an 11-8 loss to the Gwinnett Braves. Bard ended up tossing 22 pitches, 11 for strikes.

Woonsocket falls in Div. II losers' bracket final

June 11, 2012

PROVIDENCE – Head coach Dan Belisle couldn't have been more matter-of-fact after Woonsocket High suffered an 8-5 loss to West Warwick High in a R.I. Division II Tournament losers' bracket final at Rhode Island College on Monday night.
“I'm really proud of my kids,” he said following a contest best described as wild and, well, weird. “They showed a lot of fight, they showed grit, and they swung the bats well. It just didn't go our way.”

Champions! Davies belts Central for Div. III softball title

June 10, 2012

PROVIDENCE — Immediately after the Davies Tech team bus arrived at the Rhode Island College diamond at approximately 4:30 p.m., Sunday, skipper Scott Cooper strode up the aluminum stands to the press box for a coin flip with Central High's mentor, Michelle Rawcliffe.
That toss would decide the home team for this Rhode Island Division III Tournament championship series' “rubber” tilt.
When Rawcliffe chose “tails” and won the flip, choosing to bat in the bottom half of each inning, Cooper silently said a prayer.
