May 26, 2013

N.S.'s Sherman will head to Prague for tournament

May 26, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD — When Cassandra Sherman played for the Rice Memorial High prep hockey team of South Burlington, Vt. from 2010-12, she picked up a passport for her team’s various road trips through three provinces in Canada, but because her team went over the border almost every other weekend, her passport didn’t need to be stamped.
Sherman’s passport recently expired, with blank pages and nothing to show for her ventures to Canada. But she’s in the process of renewing it, and when she gets it sometime this summer, she plans to break it in -- with a colorful European stamp.

Mounties pour it on against Broncos, 12-5

May 24, 2013

WOONSOCKET -- Mount St. Charles head coach Mary Green was unsure how rain would affect her team during the Mounties’ Division III Tournament quarterfinal with Burrillville/North Smithfield Co-op, so she was hoping the storm would hold off.

She didn’t get her wish; right after the initial faceoff, the skies opened up. But her team responded to the downpour by pouring on the offense against the overmatched Broncos, scoring three goals in a 26-second span early in the first period, and rolling to a relatively easy 12-5 triumph over the Broncos

Lincoln tops Cranston West in lacrosse playoff opener

May 23, 2013

LINCOLN — To be blunt, Lincoln High head coach Mike Ethier didn’t approve of his squad’s overall desire during the opening half of its R.I. Division III Tournament quarterfinal tilt against Cranston West on windy Thursday afternoon.
The Lions had held a 3-2 advantage at the break, but Ethier and his assistants let loose on the contingent, explaining they wanted to see more spirit and fundamentally-sound lacrosse over the final 24 minutes.

Northmen advance to Division III tennis finals

May 22, 2013

LINCOLN — Will the fifth time be the charm for North Smithfield?
After coming up short in the program’s quest for its first Division III championship from 2004-06 and last season, the Northmen have earned another crack at grabbing that elusive title.
In a semifinal-round match that took just 55 minutes to complete and offered zero drama to the small scattering of fans on hand, the undefeated Northmen cruised to a 4-0 triumph over Exeter/West Greenwich at Lincoln High’s courts.

Wright doesn’t want to knuckle under troubles

May 21, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Concrete evidence as to why Steven Wright is experiencing a downturn on the mound recently was on full display in the first inning of his latest start on Monday.
Dealing with a bases-loaded mess that came about due to a walk and two singles, Wright looked in at Indianapolis’ Jerry Sands, owner of a .168 batting average. As has been the case lately, Wright quickly fell behind, this time 2-0 to Sands.

Iglesias plays third in PawSox's win over Tribe

May 21, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Pawtucket’s new third baseman came out feeling pretty good about his showing at the hot corner on Tuesday afternoon.
“It was fun to see the game from a different angle,” smiled Jose Iglesias after the PawSox came out on top in a wild 9-8 affair against Indianapolis. “I’ve never played third base in my life and it wasn’t bad.”
Iglesias was making his professional debut at third after logging 313 games at shortstop between the majors and minors. His first chance came in the third inning where Iglesias one-hopped a throw to first baseman Drew Sutton. He was charged with an error.

Mount downs Woonsocket in Div. II tennis playoffs

May 21, 2013

LINCOLN — Back on April 30, Mount St. Charles Academy head coach Sean McClelland had to face crosstown rival Woonsocket without three of his top four singles players, including senior tri-captain Jack Ricci, sophomore Mike Doody and junior Travis Connolly.
The first two were out due to illness and a back injury, respectively, while Connolly missed it for what McClelland termed “a disciplinary reason.”

Northmen hold off Spartans for 9-7 win

May 20, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD - Thankfully for North Smithfield, Scituate’s comeback ran out of innings.

Owners of a 6-0 lead after three innings of play, the Northmen had to hold off the resilient Spartans over the last four frames before coming away with a 9-7 win on Monday afternoon in their Division II-North encounter on the Northmen’s campus.

Bradley’s patience tested in rehab role with PawSox

May 20, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Jackie Bradley Jr. is no longer on the disabled list. However, the promising outfielder remains in a holding pattern.

At least for the foreseeable future, Bradley will be subjected to a schedule that the Red Sox put together in an effort to ease him back into full-time duty. He missed nearly two weeks earlier this month due to tendinitis in his right bicep, an injury that he first noticed during Pawtucket’s road trip to Rochester and Buffalo late last month.
