NIT home game means PC Friars are making progress under Cooley

March 18, 2013

PROVIDENCE – Validation that the Providence College men’s basketball program is heading in the right direction came Sunday night in the form of receiving a first-round home game in the National Invitational Tournament.
PC will welcome Charlotte to The Dunk Wednesday night for a 7:15 tip. The Friars are seeded fourth in a region while the 49ers of the Atlantic 10 are the fifth seed. Wednesday’s winner advances to face the victor of Kentucky-Robert Morris, a contest set for Tuesday night. Second-round NIT matchups are scheduled for March 21-25.

Broncos erupt in major way, even Division I finals

March 16, 2013

PROVIDENCE – While his players hooted and hollered inside the dressing room, Burrillville High head coach Steve Daigle tried to explain how his crew – after dropping a tough 1-0 decision to Barrington in the first game of this best-of-three R.I. Division I Tournament championship set – managed a vastly different scenario on Saturday afternoon.

Mount St. Charles finishes off La Salle in two games, wins state hockey championship

March 16, 2013

The hockey program at Mount St. Charles added another championship to its proud heritage on Saturday night after posting a 5-2 victory over La Salle Academy at Brown University's Meehan Auditorium. The victory completes a two-game sweep for the Mounties, who captured their 43rd state title.

Lincoln beats Prout in overtime for Div. II title

March 16, 2013

PROVIDENCE – Lincoln High sophomore goalkeeper Chris Leclaire had been stationed in his own cage, well over 120 feet away, when his teammates on the Meehan Auditorium ice began a massive celebration.
Fractions of a second before, he had watched junior forward Griffin Hevey knock a routine skimmer from just inside the opponent's blue line at freshman netminder Austin Gemma.

Mounties make bold statement in opener of state finals

March 15, 2013

PROVIDENCE — Whatever Mount St. Charles head coach Dave Belisle told his kids in the dressing room after the second period, it worked wonders.
Or is that an understatement?
The Mounties exploded for five unanswered tallies in the third – incredibly in a span of just 9:35 – to pummel La Salle Academy, 7-0, in this initial tilt of the best-of-three R.I. Championship Division series at Meehan Auditorium on Friday night.

Burrillville tamed by Barrington in 1-0 nail-biter in Game 1 of Division I finals

March 15, 2013

PROVIDENCE – Though their two teams went a combined 8-24-3 in league play this season, Burrillville and Barrington put on a championship-caliber show Thursday night.
In a contest that went down to the wire, the Eagles got a third-period goal from Michael Lombardi and came up with a huge defensive stand in a frenzied final minute to win Game 1 of the Division I finals, 1-0, at Brown University’s Meehan Auditorium. The Broncos will try to push the best-of-three series to a decisive third game when the two teams reconvene Saturday afternoon at 4 o’clock.

Lincoln claw past Prout in 3-2 thriller in opener of Div. II hockey finals

March 15, 2013

PROVIDENCE – Lincoln High wasn’t at its best against the Prout School on Thursday night.
Not only did the Lions go 0-for-4 on the power play for the game, but during their last man advantage with less than six minutes left, it not only failed to capitalize, but yielded the Crusaders a shorthanded goal.
But thanks largely to the play of sophomore goalie Chris Leclaire and his 28 stunning saves, the Lions survived with a 3-2 verdict over Prout in the initial game of this best-of-three R.I. Division II Tournament championship series at Brown University's Meehan Auditorium.

Mount begins quest for Banner No. 43 Friday night, faces La Salle in best-of-three State finals

March 13, 2013

WOONSOCKET — Fact is, Mount St. Charles Academy chief Dave Belisle likes the way his squad is playing right now.
He admitted being less than ecstatic with the Mounties' 7-4 triumph over Coventry High in the first game of a best-of-three R.I. State Championship semifinal set last Friday night, but couldn't have been more satisfied with their 4-1 victory 24 hours later.
With that sweep, second-seeded MSC earned yet another berth in the state finals, and will take on familiar foe La Salle in the series' initial tilt at Meehan Auditorium at 7:30 p.m., Friday.

They're one and done: Bearcats send Friars packing from Big East Tournament

March 13, 2013

NEW YORK – As one Cincinnati make after another settled into the nets at Madison Square Garden Wednesday, the frustration level in Kadeem Batts seemed to rise by the minute.
The Bearcats, desperate for a win that would keep them in the NCAA Tournament mix, were playing loose and free.
On the flip side, Batts and his Providence College teammates were tight and resembled the unit that got off to a dreadful 2-7 start in Big East play – not the one that closed the regular season white-hot with seven wins in nine tries.

MSG is again a house of horrors for PC's Council

March 13, 2013

NEW YORK – For one final time, the Providence player with deep New York City roots trudged off the floor at Madison Square Garden with an empty feeling in his stomach.
Vincent Council’s last chance at Big East Tournament glory resembled his previous three experiences at this hallowed cathedral – with the Friars serving as an all-too familiar one-and-done casualty. As a result, the senior point guard hailing from Brooklyn is left to ponder whether the glass is half-full or half-empty.
