Drew goes 1-for-3 in PawSox's win over Gwinnett

May 28, 2014

PAWTUCKET – Nearly seven months have passed since Stephen Drew last appeared in a major-league game.

Naturally, the goal is to see as many pitches as possible following such a lengthy layoff. Given that this is considered spring training for Drew, something he acknowledged prior to going 1-for-3 with two strikeouts in Pawtucket’s 3-0 victory over Gwinnett at frigid McCoy Stadium on Wednesday night, there’s also a sense of urgency on the shortstop’s part.

Stephen Drew’s high school coach: ‘I know he was itching to play’

May 28, 2014

PAWTUCKET — At long last, Danny Redshaw can enjoy all the perks that come with subscribing to the MLB Extra Innings package.

“It will be nice to turn on the TV and see a young man who you were fortunate enough to coach in high school and has gone on to play Major League baseball,” Redshaw admitted when reached via cell phone.

Cumberland baseball team captures Div. I playoff opener, tops East Greenwich in eight innings

May 28, 2014

CUMBERLAND — Paul Murphy didn’t know it at the time, but when Cumberland High had to fill a non-league date after a postponement last week and Barrington came calling, it would be a preview to a R.I. Division I/Region 4 Tournament opener.
The Clippers had snatched that “glorified scrimmage,” as the skipper Murphy phrased it, by an 8-6 count, but neither squad offered its best at the opponent.

May 26, 2014

WOONSOCKET -- George Nasuti would have been extremely proud of this show of support.
After last September’s inaugural event attracted 259 participants, the newly-tabbed George Nasuti Novans Pride 5K, named in memory of the longtime educator, administrator, and Woonsocket High athletic director who passed away unexpectedly in February, saw a huge spike in signups.

Mount tennis team completes perfect season, downs Classical to repeat as Division II state champions

May 24, 2014

PAWTUCKET — Mount St. Charles junior Mike Doody had just suffered a lopsided 6-1, 6-1 loss to Classical High sophomore Austen Clark at the top singles spot, but he didn't dwell on it.
Seconds after his individual match had ended, he grabbed his gear from one section of Slater Park's Mike Kenny Courts at mid-afternoon Saturday and hustled to the other to catch a glimpse of his teammates' tilts.
“This is hard,” he sighed while watching the Mount's second and third doubles' pairs. “When I'm playing, I can control what I'm doing. Watching them, I feel helpless. I can't do anything about it.”

Undefeated Narragansett dethrones North Smithfield as Division III tennis champions with 4-0 triumph

May 24, 2014

PAWTUCKET — The last time North Smithfield had faced Narragansett, way back on cold and windy April 14, the Northmen snatched all three doubles matches before the four singles players suffered defeats.
The final: Narragansett, 4-3.
Based on that information, North Smithfield head coach Matt Pavao had hoped one or two of his singles representatives could eke out a triumph when the two forces met again for the R.I. Division III Team Tournament championship.

MSC tennis team defeats Chariho in semifinals, sets sights on Div. II championship match vs. Classical

May 23, 2014

LINCOLN — In a magical undefeated season that has seen the entire team lose just eight sets and experience very few nailbiting moments, Mount St. Charles endured its share of anxiety eight days ago in its regular-season finale with one-loss Classical, which resulted in a 4-3 victory that went down to the wire.

Mount girls defeat North Smithfield/Burrillville co-op squad again in Div. III lacrosse quarterfinals, 16-10

May 22, 2014

WOONSOCKET — On Monday afternoon, Mount St. Charles cruised to an easy 20-7 triumph over North Smithfield/Burrillville Co-op in both squads’ penultimate Division III contest.
It could have been the Mounties, who like the Northerners were missing a few players for a variety of reasons in that clash, were expecting the same kind of result when the rivals met again in a state D-III Tournament quarterfinal on Thursday.
Nothing could’ve been further from the truth. North Smithfield/Burrillville catapulted to leads of 4-1 and 6-3 over the initial 9:09 and went into the break tied at 7-all.

May 20, 2014

PAWTUCKET — Rich Sauveur firmly believes that all five current members of the PawSox’ starting rotation possess the ability to hold down jobs at pro baseball’s highest level.

“Whether it’s with Boston or with somebody else, they’re going to start in the big leagues. I really feel that,” said Pawtucket’s pitching coach with a straight face. “I couldn’t tell you when or with who, but they will.”

PawSox fail to produce clutch hit in loss to 'Riders

May 20, 2014

PAWTUCKET — Springtime may have finally sprung in southern New England, but Pawtucket’s bats remain in a deep slumber.
The offensive doldrums that have plagued the locals for much of the season perhaps simmered to a boil during the eighth inning of Tuesday’s disheartening 3-0 loss to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, winners of three games in this four-game set. With two runners on base and the potential tying run at the plate, the PawSox turned to their Nos. 4 and 5 hitters in the hope seeing a ball disappear over the McCoy Stadium fence.
