April 17, 2012

Dave Constantino has been competing in marathons for a decade, and when it came down to recalling the hottest ones he has run, the Cumberland resident didn’t hesitate to bring up the 26.2-mile adventure he encountered on Monday at the Boston Marathon.
“That was probably the hottest marathon I have ever done out of the 10 years I have been competing,” Constantino said on Tuesday morning while he was “recuperating” at Scarborough Beach. “That was unbelievable. It was a tough one. It was a tough one for everybody.”

April 16, 2012

PAWTUCKET — Minutes after Cumberland High’s respectable but not outstanding 5-3 triumph over St. Raphael Academy on Monday afternoon, Clippers’ skipper Paul Murphy reacted to the pure facts – that the last four hitters in his lineup had assembled a collective 4-for-11 outing, good for a .364 average, four RBI and a run scored.

Clippers stay hot, deck Mounties

April 12, 2012

WOONSOCKET — On Tuesday, host Cumberland High pounded out 17 hits, including nine for extra bases, en route to a 14-0 “mercy rule” pasting of Smithfield High.
Skipper Paul Murphy’s crew didn’t supply him and assistant Dale O’Dell with the same kind of offensive barrage 48 hours later at Mount St. Charles, but it did register eight hits to post a second consecutive “mercy rule” triumph over the Mounties, this time an 11-0 verdict on Thursday.

No contest as softball Lions belt Clippers

April 11, 2012

CUMBERLAND — The softball seasons have passed and the names have come and gone, but one thing you could always count on year after year any time Lincoln and Cumberland played each other was a spirited, competitive duel -- a showdown that was usually going to be decided by one or two runs.
That’s what the small gathering of fans that braved the chilly weather at Wednesday afternoon’s Division I-North affair at Tucker Field expected from the two unbeaten rivals, but what they got was a shocking surprise.

PawSox players weigh in on Guillen's comments

April 10, 2012

PAWTUCKET – Tuesday morning saw a small group of PawSox players huddle around the clubhouse television as a contrite Ozzie Guillen attempted to move past the uproar he caused over supportive remarks the Miami Marlins manager made in reference to Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
Among those who sat and watched Guillen with great interest were Jose Iglesias and Luis Exposito. In fact, the pair stood side-by-side for roughly 10 minutes before Iglesias plopped himself down into a leather chair, his eyes clearly fixated on what Guillen was saying.

Cumberland's 17-hit attack roughs up Smithfield

April 10, 2012

CUMBERLAND — It’s almost eerie how well Cumberland High struck the ball on Tuesday afternoon.
“We hit it pretty well in our second game against Moses Brown, and in the Injury Fund (tilt) against Woonsocket, but I’ve never seen anything like this,” explained senior righty Justin Patrick after the Clippers clubbed 17 hits – including nine for extra bases – in a 14-0 thrashing of still-winless Smithfield High at Tucker Field.

Andrew Miller poised to join PawSox after two successful rehab outings with Class A Greenville

April 10, 2012

PAWTUCKET – Finally, there’s some good news concerning Andrew Miller.
Barring any setbacks, the hurler expects to take the next step in his rehab and join the Pawtucket Red Sox at some point on the team’s upcoming nine-game road trip. Miller made his second of two appearances with Single-A Greenville Monday, seeking to build off of Saturday’s one-inning stint that featured no runs on two hits. He did just that, retiring all three batters he faced on two groundball outs and one strikeout.
“I felt healthy and that’s all I can ask for,” said Miller when reached Monday afternoon.
