Sayles places second in high jump at state meet

February 18, 2012

PROVIDENCE – In a time of uncertainty, all Ali Sayles of Mount St. Charles could do is rely on pure adrenaline – hoping somehow, some way that everything would work out for the best.
Despite a tough ending in the finals of the girls’ high jump at Saturday’s R.I. Indoor Track & Field Championships, Sayles was able to salvage a bit of good news. The senior cleared the bar with a leap of five feet, four inches, good for second place overall. Sayles’ jump was also a personal- and school-best (she achieved 5-2 at the 2011 indoor state meet).

WESTFIELD, Mass. — Lee Vazquez is the “Little Big Man” of the Westfield State University men’s basketball team.
Standing at only 5-foot-6, the explosive point guard and former Woonsocket High standout is ranked 18th nationally in the NCAA Division III ranks in scoring, averaging 21.3 points per game. He has been putting up some big numbers this season, scoring more than 30 points in six games, including a career-high 41 vs. Worcester State.

Finally! Mount ends four-game skid vs. La Salle

February 17, 2012

WARWICK — The fifth time was the charm.
Ryan Berard’s unassisted goal -- a seemingly harmless pass from behind the net that deflected off the skate of a La Salle defenseman and past the goalie -- with 2:38 to go in the game snapped a 2-2 tie and helped Mount St. Charles nab a huge 4-2 victory over the Rams at Thayer Arena.
Brian Campbell’s goal off a pass from Brian Belisle with 1:53 left sealed the deal and allowed the Mounties (11-5) to yank a huge monkey off their backs and beat the Rams (10-5-1) for the first time in five meetings this season.

Friars see postseason hopes slip away

February 17, 2012

PROVIDENCE — Ed Cooley claims had no idea that Wednesday’s loss at Cincinnati resulted in his Providence Friars dipping below .500 for the first time this season.
“To be honest with you, I didn’t even know that,” Cooley said after this reporter informed him of the news Friday, one day before PC welcomes 10th-ranked Georgetown to The Dunk Saturday night. In the same breath Cooley added, “If you worry about your record, then you’re not concentrating on the right things.”

Gardner eyes return to super middleweight ranks

February 16, 2012

WOONSOCKET --- Joe Gardner is going back to the future.
No, he’s not going to jump in a DeLorean with Doc Brown and head back to 1955, but the Woonsocket Boxing Club boxer is going to go back to 2002 and ’03 and return to the weight class he fought in during those first two years of his career.
After absorbing stoppages in all three of his fights as a light heavyweight last year, Gardner will storm into 2012 as a super middleweight, where he posted a 4-0-1 record before taking a 7½-year sabbatical from the sport.

Lincoln's Zammarelli sets his sights on Elon

February 16, 2012

LINCOLN — There’s no room for confusion or interpretation when you’re that sure about something. Make no mistake: Nick Zammarelli’s mind is already made up regarding where he wants to play college baseball.
A junior at Lincoln High, Zammarelli recently announced his intention to attend Division I Elon University, located in North Carolina. To issue a verbal that signifies the acceptance of an athletic scholarship package long before Zammarelli is even eligible to sign a national letter of intent speaks volumes of just how comfortable the player is with the school and vice versa.

Clippers complete perfect dual-meet season

February 15, 2012

WARWICK – Things were not looking good for Cumberland High three matches into its regular season finale against defending state team tourney champion Warwick Veterans on Wednesday evening.
The Clippers, seeking their 57th consecutive dual-meet victory and third straight unbeaten season, trailed Warwick Vets 15-0. Cumberland needed to make something happen in a hurry and Nick Tribelli answered the call with a stunning pin at 126 pounds.
“Once we got that win from Nick, I knew we had a shot,” Cumberland coach Steve Gordon said after his Clippers rallied for a 44-29 triumph.

Shea too much for Lincoln, 66-37

February 14, 2012

LINCOLN – You want to keep fighting the good fight, but sometimes that’s not nearly enough.
A season littered with frustrating moments continues for Kent Crooks and his Lincoln High squad. The Lions dressed just six players for Tuesday night’s Division II-Central contest against Shea, the Raiders taking full advantage in a 66-37 runaway performance at The Lions’ Den.

It's a runaway: Northmen hammer Broncos, 65-31

NORTH SMITHFIELD – North Smithfield’s fast-paced offense was clicking in the first half.
The second half, it was even better.
In a special “Pink Out For Cancer” contest Tuesday night, the Northmen were lights out after the break, cruising to an eventual 65-31 win over Burrillville at the Lovett Gymasium.
Senior Matt Walkow netted a game-best 22 points and senior Carlos Guzman and sophomore Peter Keenan each scored 13 points.
