Versatility the name of Lars Anderson's game; Podsednik joins PawSox

May 13, 2012

PAWTUCKET -- The way Lars Anderson figures it, versatility is the key to getting back to the Boston Red Sox.
That’s why the Pawtucket Red Sox first baseman called Mike Hazen, now Boston’s Vice President and Assistant General Manager, last November and asked that he be considered for an outfield position.
Given Adrian Gonzalez’ contract with Boston, he figured, “Why not?
“He told me he thought it was a good idea, and that he would talk to the powers-that-be,” Anderson, 24, said in the clubhouse prior to Pawtucket’s tilt against the Columbus Clippers on Sunday morning.

Acevedo earns global distinction in ‘Palace Hand’

May 12, 2012

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Alysha Acevedo didn't cringe, but did seem rather uncomfortable when asked how she's doing academically in this, her junior year at North Smithfield High.
“Not so good in chemistry; math isn't going too well, either, and I love math!” she chuckled. “But I did get a 95 last week on my chemistry/common task, which is sort of like a project. The good news is I did something I didn't think I'd be able to do.”

Mortensen takes demotion to PawSox in stride

May 11, 2012

PAWTUCKET — Despite posting downright gaudy numbers in his shortlived Red Sox stint, Clayton Mortensen was farmed out to Pawtucket because of one simple yet often overlooked factoid.
He still has minor-league options remaining.
Guys like Mortensen, they perform a service akin to a security blanket. To the big-league teams, to have a player with options still on the table, creates the kind of roster flexibility that can prove most handy.

Gomez to the rescue as PawSox top Red Wings

May 10, 2012

PAWTUCKET — Mauro Gomez ended his slump in a big way on Thursday afternoon.
The veteran first baseman delivered a two-out, two-run double into the right-field corner in the bottom of the eighth inning to erase a one-run deficit and lift the Pawtucket Red Sox to a 6-5 victory over the Rochester Red Wings in the finale of their four-game series at McCoy Stadium
Gomez, who was an International League All-Star with the Gwinnett Braves last year, came into this contest with just four hits in his last 45 at-bats, two of them coming in Wednesday night’s 5-2 win over the Red Wings.

Mount’s Brad Auclair: Ruler of the links

May 10, 2012

LINCOLN -- When senior Brad Auclair checked his text messages at Mount St. Charles on Thursday morning, he found one particularly intriguing – and funny.
“My father (John) likes to give me some advice before every match, and he said something like, ‘Swing smooth, relax, just go out and have fun,’” Auclair explained. “He also said, ‘Hit the ball solid’ and to think my way around the course, where I should leave each shot. He closed it with ‘Go out and shoot 32 again.’
“When I read it, I was thinking, ‘Yeah, right,’” he added. “I just wanted to be around par.”

Justin Thomas reflects on Boston bullpen stint; PawSox clip Red Wings

May 9, 2012

PAWTUCKET – For Justin Thomas, the near month he spent as member of Boston’s bullpen was merely a case of guilt by association.
Even though the 28-year-old lefthander was relegated to afterthought status – while with the Red Sox, Thomas allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings prior to getting farmed out to Pawtucket on April 27 – he was still part of a unit that became known as the land of diminished returns. No matter which reliever BoSox manager Bobby Valentine summoned, disaster seemed to follow.

PawSox' Hassan able to turn things around

May 9, 2012

PAWTUCKET – Through all the early-season struggles he endured, Alex Hassan never once thought about reinventing the wheel, i.e. tweaking his batting stance or adjusting his hands on the bat, the kind of wholesale changes that no doubt creep into a player’s mind whenever things aren’t going well.

Rochester snaps PawSox's four-game win streak

May 8, 2012

PAWTUCKET – The Pawtucket Red Sox were able to dodge the raindrops Tuesday night. The same cannot be said of the Rochester Red Wings.
Buoyed by 5 2/3 innings of strong pitching by Liam Hendriks, the Red Wings grounded the PawSox, 3-1, before 3,325 rain-free fans at McCoy Stadium. The forecast called for a major weather disturbance to arrive at some point during the game, but the precipitation was able to hold off long enough that the teams were able to get this one in.

Brunansky’s ‘still in awe’ over honor from Red Sox

May 8, 2012

PAWTUCKET — Say this about the Boston Red Sox – the organization is leaving no stone unturned when it comes to commemorating the centennial anniversary of Fenway Park.
As part of the season-long celebration, the Sox have set aside this month as a prime chance to revisit some of the ballpark’s most spine-tingling moments and salute the players primarily responsible for creating them.

Burrillville-SRA tennis showdown is suspended

May 8, 2012

BURRILLVILLE -- The D’Antuono brother tandem of sophomore Mike and junior Matt wanted desperately for Burrillville High to post a spirited victory over St. Raphael Academy on Tuesday afternoon.
They did their part, as both assembled straight-set victories over the Saints’ No. 1 and 2 representatives, seniors Sam Reinhardt and Juan Bedoya, respectively.
Perhaps a half hour after Mike had mustered a 6-1, 6-0 win over Reinhardt and Matt dispatched Bedoya, 6-1, 6-1, however, the rain became steadier, though the remaining players wanted to continue their assaults on winning.
