Wrestling Clippers out to defend state title

February 21, 2013

CUMBERLAND – As far as Cumberland High head coach Steve Gordon is concerned, the beauty of the Rhode Island Interscholastic Wrestling Championships is that anything can happen at any given moment; that you can toss all conventional wisdom aside due to the glory at stake.

Lady Lions fight the good fight, but Panthers prevail

February 21, 2013

BURRILLVILLE -- It looked as if Burrillville High would make the most of its Senior Night celebration after entering intermission behind Division II-North opponent North Providence by a mere five (24-19).
The Broncos opened the final stanza in style, with senior Ashley Spear canning a turnaround one-hander in the lane and classmate Emma Lapierre hitting a putback with only 2:21 expired. Actually, the tri-captain had been fouled on the bucket, and went to the charity stripe set to tie the contest for the first time at 24-all.

Burrillville skates to 2-2 draw with Cranston West

February 20, 2013

CRANSTON — Burrillville may been on vacation from school this week, but that hasn’t prevented the Broncos from working overtime these past few days.
Two days after posting a thrilling OT victory on the road over Barrington, the Broncos picked up a point in the Division I-Eccleston standings on Wednesday afternoon by battling Cranston West to a 2-2 draw at the Cranston Vets Rink.

Northmen belt Chieftains, advance to Div. II semis

February 20, 2013

CUMBERLAND – The postseason may be afoot, but make no mistake: this is still the same North Smithfield power keg.
The same squad that was blemish-free during the regular season remained true to form in its playoff opener Wednesday night. Led by usual suspects Matt Walkow, Peter Keenan and Cody L’Heureux, top seed North Smithfield overwhelmed No. 9 Ponaganset, 80-42, in the Division III quarterfinals. Next up for T.J. Ciolfi & Co. is a semifinal-round matchup with No. 4 Johnston Friday at Roger Williams University.

PROVIDENCE — There’s no need for Lee Goldsbrough to conceal his true emotions. For the first time in his Providence College tenure, basketball is fun.

Third-period rally lifts Spartans to 3-2 victory over Villa Novans

February 19, 2013

WOONSOCKET — Highlights have been few and far between this year for Woonsocket, a young squad that has been slowly trying to rebuild its program since the Villa Novans won the Division III-North title three seasons ago.
On Tuesday afternoon, before a small, but energetic gathering at Adelard Arena, all the hard work, sweat, and tears the Villa Novans put into their season nearly paid off in the form of their first victory of the year, but Scituate spoiled their aspirations.

Clippers' Bauer wins two individual events at boys' swimming state meet

February 18, 2013

PROVIDENCE — Cumberland High senior co-captain Andrew Bauer took a specific but incredibly-optimistic plan into these R.I. Boys Swimming Championships on Monday night.
It was his lofty goal to break his own school mark in the 200-yard freestyle, then set new CHS marks at the 500 distance, not to mention the 50 and 100 freestyles.

Northmen hockey team inches closer to securing playoff berth

February 18, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD -- North Smithfield entered this week knowing full well that if the Northmen wanted to qualify for the Division II playoffs, they would need to produce a win or two over their final three regular-season games.
But at first glance, that seemed to be a chore that was easier said than done. Those three contests – over a five-day span – were against teams with winning records, and two were versus opponents that had already secured a spot in the eight-team tournament that begins on Friday, March 1.

Kent, Westrick swim to multiple state championships

February 17, 2013

PROVIDENCE — Out with the “old,” in with the new.
For Cumberland High senior co-captain Courtney Kent, she couldn't have fathomed a better way to close her interscholastic career at the R.I. Girls Swimming Championships, held Saturday afternoon at the recently-finished Brown University natatorium.
Really, who would argue with two individual crowns, not to mention a relay title and a runner-up in another?
