MSC girls take over sole ownership of first place

January 29, 2012

WOONSOCKET – Mount St. Charles took charge of the Emma Division race on Saturday night with a 3-1 victory over La Salle Academy.
This battle between the two top teams in the state featured a strong goaltending performance by La Salle’s Holly Scott (45 saves) that kept the game close.
Mount took a 1-0 lead just one minute into the game on an unassisted goal by Brianna Castro. La Salle tied it at the 3:27 mark when Meaghan Rickard beat Mount goalie Sarah Erban.

HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Mount hits low point in loss to La Salle

January 29, 2012

WOONSOCKET – After scoring its biggest win of the season on Friday night, Mount St. Charles endured a stunning 6-1 loss to La Salle Academy at Adelard Arena on Saturday night.
The Rams may have caught the Mounties napping early in this game as they scored two first-period goals and then added two more in the second period for a 4-0 lead after two stanzas.

Woonsocket, Mount girls among several teams with low numbers

January 28, 2012

When you play golf, consistently shooting low numbers is a positive thing. When you step on your bathroom scale, seeing low numbers will always make your day.
But when it applies to your basketball team, or any sport for that matter, low numbers are often not good. Low numbers usually equate to low numbers in the win column.
Longtime Mount St. Charles Academy girls’ basketball coach Nine Morey knows all about that. The Mounties, who have averaged 15 wins the last four seasons, including a state runner-up finish in 2007-08 and last year, are struggling this winter.

WEB ONLY: Mount hands Hendricken first loss

January 28, 2012

WARWICK --- Victories don’t get any bigger than this one.
Mount St. Charles knocked Bishop Hendricken from the unbeaten ranks on Friday night by skating to an impressive 4-1 win in their Division I contest at Thayer Arena.
Junior center Brian Belisle scored a pair of unassisted goals late in the third period for the Mounties, who improved to 6-4 and dropped the Hawks to 10-1-1.
The Mounties took a 2-0 lead on Ryan Berard’s goal 6:55 into the game and Callan Morisseau’s goal 1:50 into the second period before the Hawks tied the score midway through that period.

Mount girls edge arch-rival Bay View

January 27, 2012

WOONSOCKET --- Caitlin Shea’s unassisted goal with 3:19 to play in the second period snapped a 2-2 tie, and Mount St. Charles was able to hold on the rest of the way and grab a 3-2 win over rival Bay View on Friday night at Adelard Arena.
The victory was the eighth in a row for the Mounties, who are 10-1 and had suffered their loss back on Dec. 16 to the Bengals, 2-1.

Lady Novans outlast SRA, 41-36

January 27, 2012

WOONSOCKET – On a night in which she was honored for scoring her 1,000 career point earlier this season, senior Kailey Fugere and the rest of her Woonsocket High teammates cooled off a resurging St. Raphael Academy program Friday night with a 41-36 decision at Savaria Gymnasium.
Fugere, who was recognized for her milestone during a halftime ceremony, finished with 17 points. The game was hardly the Villa Novans best effort, however, as St. Ray’s overcame a 14-point deficit before the break and made their host sweat it out until the final buzzer.

Lincoln ices Cumberland, 6-2

January 26, 2012

PAWTUCKET --- The fans who packed Lynch Arena on Thursday hoping to see a tight game between Lincoln and Cumberland that resembled the double-overtime thriller they played in the Toll Gate Holiday Tournament finals didn’t get their wish granted.
The Lions erupted for three goals in the second period and two in the first 5½ minutes of the third and held the Clippers to just 19 shots on net en route to a 6-2 win in the Kyle J. McLaughlin Scholarship Fund benefit hockey game.

Lincoln swimmers earn split

January 26, 2012

LINCOLN – Head coach Tom Diiorio doesn’t care too much about dual-meet records. When it comes to his Lincoln High boys’ and girls’ teams, his main concern is that his athletes are swimming well with a fair share of them qualifying for next month’s state championships.
Both those objectives are being met this season.

More troubles for D-III hockey teams

January 26, 2012

If the shaky futures of the Tolman and Woonsocket hockey teams didn’t need to receive any additional bad news, they indirectly got some at Monday night’s meeting of the R.I. Interscholastic League’s Principals’ Committee on Athletics in Providence.
Among the developments that transpired during this session was the matter of extending the periods in Division III, as well as girls’ hockey, from 12 to 15 minutes. This was put to a vote and narrowly (and surprisingly) approved by a 6-to-5 vote.

Bennett returns to Mount hockey team's lineup

January 25, 2012

These past two months have been sheer torture for Nick Bennett.
During this time, the senior defenseman has been a fixture at Adelard Arena, practicing with his Mount St. Charles teammates late every weekday afternoon. But once the weekend rolls around, he’s had to take off his skates, step off to the side, and be a mere spectator as the Mounties took the ice for their Division I and non-league games.
