Lincoln Swimming | Lions' freestyle ace Westrick hopes to treat at state meet

LINCOLN  –  A year ago next month, then-Lincoln High sophomore Mollie Westrick had high hopes of continuing her dominance at the Rhode Island Interscholastic Girls’ Swimming Championships.

As a freshman, Westrick wowed the throngs in the Brown University natatorium by capturing not only the 100-yard butterfly but also the 100-yard backstroke titles.

The bad news: those same Friars are averaging 69.1 points-per-game through 17 outings, placing them last in scoring in the 10-team conference as of Tuesday.

PAWTUCKET – In their first year running Tolman High’s wrestling program, head coach Jason Rushton and assistant Matt Medina are instilling an aggressive approach that may bring dividends by tournament time, assuming the wrestlers keep working hard.

The Tigers showed flashes of skill during a 40-36 loss to Ponaganset on Tuesday evening at the Donaldson Gym. Ponaganset, now 4-1 on the season, jumped out to a 40-9 lead before the Tigers won the final five matches (two by forfeit).

CUMBERLAND – Cumberland High didn't reign in its own annual John D. Gorman Memorial Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, but veteran head coach Steve Gordon didn't mind an iota.

After all, some of the best squads from around New England received invitations, and Gordon perceives the event as a solid, mid-season “testing ground” for his grapplers.
