January 5, 2013

BURRILLVILLE — Whichever anecdote you start the portrait with, rest assured the canvas reserved for Wilfred "Skee" Carter's legacy won’t remain blank for long.
Carter’s true legacy is a lifetime of vivid hues that epitomize what this gentle and sincere man means to the town of Burrillville. Last Wednesday’s news of his sudden passing was a jolt to the systems of those who interacted with him over the years – and there were countless people in this rural community who had the good fortune of coming into contact with Skee.

WEB ONLY: Mount girls hold off East Bay co-op team

January 5, 2013

WOONSOCKET --- Mount St. Charles endured one of its toughest tests to date on Friday night when the East Bay (Barrington/Mount Hope/Portsmouth) co-op squad bused into Adelard Arena for a crossover affair, but the Mounties were still able to come away with a hard-fought 3-1 win.
The Mounties ran into a very hot goaltender in Sophie Faxon, who turned away 42 shots, but did all the damage they needed to do late in the first period on a pair of goals by junior Briana Castro (her 11th and 12th of the season) to net their sixth victory in seven games.

MSC boys finish strong, best Lincoln

January 3, 2013

LINCOLN — At a practice session two days after Christmas, Lincoln High head coach Tom DiIorio watched as his boys' team swam through a set of 25-yard sprints, and – suddenly – he heard one of his star athletes, junior Jason Kimball, scream in agony.

Mountie girls use depth to swim past Lions

January 3, 2013

LINCOLN — Even in the throes of defeat, there was no taming the excitement of Lincoln High sophomore Nicole Moneghan and freshman Mollie Westrick.
Even before the Lions had suffered a 56-38 Division II loss to Mount St. Charles at the MacColl YMCA natatorium on Thursday afternoon, Moneghan – still in the pool after winning the 500-yard freestyle – splashed around in her lane after receiving word from head coach Tom DiIorio she had finally broken the coveted six-minute mark.
“I did what?” she grinned.

Late turnovers doom Novans in loss to Blue Wave

January 2, 2013

WOONSOCKET -- Luis Garcia may have nailed an NBA-length trey at the buzzer, but it wasn’t enough for Woonsocket High on Wednesday night.
The Villa Novans committed 23 turnovers – including 14 in the final half – and converted just 10 of 24 from the charity stripe (41.7 percent) and ultimately dropped a 54-46 Division I crossover decision to Hope High before a crowd of perhaps 100.
After head coach Kyle Ivey-Jones’ bunch overcame a 29-22 deficit with 11:59 left in the second stanza, slicing the deficit to 34-30, Hope later mustered an 11-2 run in the span of 3:47 to seal the victory.

December 31, 2012

Just when you thought it was going to be awfully difficult to top all the great accomplishments and moments that took place in 2011...
Another wonderful year has passed in the Blackstone Valley, and 2012 supplied the region’s sports scene with an abundance of state championship teams, remarkable individual performances, and its Triple-A baseball team, the Pawtucket Red Sox, seizing its first Governors’ Cup title since 1984.

PC Friars to make short trek to Brown's campus

December 27, 2012

PROVIDENCE – When this possibility – Providence College playing at Brown – was first rumored last spring, more than a few eyebrows were raised.
A school hailing from the Big East that’s willing to serve as the away team in a venue that houses an Ivy League participant? Surely you jest?
What was once thought a mere pipedream becomes reality Friday night when the Friars take the steep climb up Waterman Street before hanging a left onto Hope Street. A few blocks down sits the Pizzitola Center, home to the Bears and site for what is truly a rare occasion.

Broncos tame Davies Tech in Smithfield girls' hoops tourney

December 26, 2012

SMITHFIELD — Prior to facing Davies Tech in a Red Division tilt of the 26th annual Rhode Island Board of Girls Basketball Officials/Smithfield Boosters Club Holiday Classic on Wednesday afternoon, Burrillville High head coach Lindsay Rachlow asked her players to work on what she deemed a few weaknesses.
They included more attention to finding the open girl and rebounding.
She saw some improvements in both as the Broncos crushed the Patriots, 54-23, at Smithfield High’s gymnasium, the long-term site of the event.

Pawtucket's Nyheem Sanders makes most out of second chance with RIC men's basketball team

December 25, 2012

PROVIDENCE — His primary outlet and source of pure enjoyment having been taken away, the question was then posed as to how Nyheem Sanders planned on incorporating competitive basketball back into his life.

It was a college career squarely on the bubble, and that’s where the story of this Pawtucket native begins.
No one wants to hear the message that Sanders was told in fall of 2011, when Bob Walsh, the men’s basketball head coach at Rhode Island College, informed Sanders that he didn’t figure into the Anchormen’s plans for the upcoming season.

LeClair overcomes adversity in championship season

December 24, 2012

BURRILLVILLE — As the scoreboard clock ticked down to “0:00” on Monday night, Nov. 5, Jaime LeClair-Roy sat in the front row of the Roger Williams University Stadium's stands with her family, numb not from the bitter cold but at what she was witnessing.
Her daughter, senior goalkeeper Alex LeClair, had just led her Burrillville High girls' field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Smithfield, and in the process sealed for the Broncos their first Division II state championship in 28 years.
