October 3, 2012

LINCOLN – Dick Ryan knows what a special talent he has in Emily Bouthillette, hence why the Lincoln High softball coach isn’t afraid to spread the word regarding a player that Ryan feels is flying somewhat “under the radar.”

Northmen spikers exact revenge against Clippers

October 2, 2012

CUMBERLAND — Ever since North Smithfield lost its season-opening match to Cumberland, a five-set defeat that saw the Clippers clock the Northmen in the final game, 15-3, the Northmen have eagerly awaited their rematch with the Clippers and circled the date on their calendars.
It certainly showed on Tuesday night.

Desrosiers' goal lifts unbeaten Broncos past Clippers

October 1, 2012

BURRILLVILLE -- Back on Thursday, Sept. 20, Burrillville High needed overtime to dispatch Division II rival Cumberland, 1-0, at its Tucker Field home.
According to senior tri-captain Laura Hauser, the Broncos didn’t want to go to an extra session again.
“Our game plan was to stop their drives from going through because they did a pretty good job of that the first time,” Hauser said of the squads’ second meeting on Monday afternoon. “Their goalie (senior Elizabeth Alberg) also is pretty fast, so we needed to work her, catch her off-balance.”

Villa Novans dig deep, top Bulldogs in OT

September 29, 2012

WESTERLY — It’s a long 65-mile drive from Woonsocket to Westerly’s Augeri Field, but the Villa Novans’ bus ride home from the southwestern point of the state on Saturday afternoon had to be a very enjoyable drive.
That’s because the Villa Novans took a 19-18 overtime thriller from the previously-undefeated Bulldogs in their Division II-A clash, a hard-fought win that upped their league record to 2-1 and packed them into a congested three-way tie for second place (behind undefeated Johnston) with Westerly and Coventry.

Northmen survive shootout with Cougars, 38-34

September 29, 2012

NORTH PROVIDENCE — For North Smithfield, Saturday’s Division IV contest against North Providence was more of a mental exercise than physical.
Forced to come back on a few occasions, the Northmen dug deep to take this shootout, 38-34. North Providence enjoyed leads early – 12-0 after the first quarter – and late – 34-31 with 8:47 remaining – before N.S. delivered a series of game-changing plays on both sides of the ball that allowed the visitors to cast a pall over the Cougars’ Homecoming celebration.

Though plans are still being finalized, Tamburro, gave the green light to announce that the Governors’ Cup trophy will be making the rounds this offseason. Right now the target is to bring the silver hardware to each and every Rhode Island city and town along with neighboring Massachusetts communities.

September 27, 2012

Cumberland head coach looks back at days as St. Raphael coordinator

September 27, 2012

A coordinator’s duties seem to be the attention grabber on a résumé, the kind that allows a deserving candidate to push to the top of the list whenever head coaching opportunities surface.

Mother gets better of daughter as Broncos top 'Bolts

September 27, 2012

BURRILLVILLE — Mere seconds after Burrillville High had sailed to a 4-0 Division II-North victory over Cranston East on Thursday afternoon, players – as is standard fare – walked the sideline closest to the team benches and issued other high-fives while stating over and over “Good game.”
When it got to the head coaches, the Broncos’ Susan Burgess looked at the Thunderbolt’s Sarah Knowlton and offered something undecipherable.
Burgess then placed her arm around her and grinned, and Knowlton responded with a smile before the two embraced right at the midfield stripe.

C.F. booters defeat Cumberland, remain unbeaten

September 26, 2012

CUMBERLAND – Central Falls High head coach Carl Africo doesn't ask former mentor Bobby Marchand to help him out with scouting, but – if he's going to offer – the former isn't about to argue.
Prior to the Warriors' Division I tilt against Cumberland on Wednesday night, Marchand told Africo he had seen the Clippers play at Barrington earlier in the week, and told him that junior striker Kyle Courtney had the speed and ball skills to be a thorn in CF's defensive side.
