Novans take OT thriller from Saints in Div. II quarters

November 11, 2012

PAWTUCKET — As is the standard after a football game, Woonsocket High head coach Carnell Henderson walked to the midfield stripe behind his troops and shook hands with opposing players and coaches alike.
He congratulated all for a job well done, then hugged a few St. Raphael Academy assistants before speaking briefly with long-time Saints' mentor Mike Sassi.
Maybe four milliseconds later, he bolted to his squad and leaped into a few of his heftier players' arms, then – after a few choice words, naturally all positive – he led his kids in a classic Villa Novans' chant.

Mighty EWG blasts N.S. girls in Div. II soccer semis

November 11, 2012

CRANSTON — Head coach Jeremy Sherer didn’t have to dig deep to find the reason why his North Smithfield team lost to two-time defending champion Exeter/West Greenwich in their Division II semifinal-round affair on Saturday afternoon at Cranston Stadium.
“I thought for the most part, we got muscled off the ball too much,” the second-year coach said after his Northmen suffered a 5-1 loss to the unbeaten Scarlet Knights. “They’re a strong team, they’re physical, and they did a nice job of beating us to the ball. It really came down to the 50-50s. They won them and we didn’t.”

Back to the Div. II semis: Clippers hammer Bulldogs

November 9, 2012

CUMBERLAND – How do you spell dominance? Try C-U-M-B-E-R-L-A-N-D on for size.
Cumberland kicked off its Division II playoff mission in emphatic fashion Friday evening, the Clippers’ 41-6 conquest of Westerly made possible by the usual cast of stellar performers. Erik Travers rushed for 112 yards and one touchdown while quarterback Brendan Guerin passed for two scores. Not to be outdone, Mitchell Baxter recorded two interceptions while teammates Joe Fine and Dan Stock also found the end zone.

Cooley hopes zone defense pays off for Friars

November 9, 2012

PROVIDENCE — Ed Cooley came to Providence College armed with the reputation of being a defensive, get-after-it coach. The five years he spent at Fairfield’s helm suggested that after a seemingly endless run of witnessing the Friars languish in the bottom tier in Big East team defense, more than lip service would finally be paid to an area that statistically speaking has been a major deficiency.

Friars look to defy basketball critics this year

November 9, 2012

PROVIDENCE — There was a time last spring and summer when Providence Friar fans were salivating at the promise surrounding the 2012-13 season. A highly-touted recruiting class coupled with a group of noteworthy holdovers seemed to signal clearance for takeoff in Ed Cooley’s second year, giving off an aura that for the first time in a long while, Providence was a program on an up swing.

Behind enemy lines: Coaches size up area Division II football playoff participants

November 8, 2012

Dino Campopiano and his Shea High gridders won’t get another crack at Cumberland or St. Raphael this season.
Conversely, if Brian Cote’s Mount Hope squad were to cross paths with Woonsocket once again, such a matchup wouldn’t take place until the Division II Super Bowl.

Mounties hang tough before falling to Oakers in Division I volleyball semifinals

November 7, 2012

KINGSTON --- After handing Mount St. Charles its most lopsided defeat of the regular season, Coventry found a way to deal the Mounties an agonizingly close loss on Wednesday night in the Division I semifinals.
Owners of a 14-13 lead in a back-and-forth fifth and deciding game, the Mounties were unable to tally the magical 15th point that would have sent them to Saturday’s 5 p.m. championship match back at URI’s Keaney Gym.

Unbeaten Burrillville claims Div. II field hockey title

November 5, 2012

BRISTOL — When Burrillville High senior tri-captain Laura Hauser went home after school to grab her uniform Monday afternoon, there was a strange addition next to her jersey, laying right there on her bed.
“It was about 2:30, and I found a lucky penny, with the head up,” she explained. “My mom said she didn't have any idea how it got there. I almost walked out of the house without it; I got to my car, then forgot I didn't have it, so I turned around and raced back to get it.
“I mean, I'm a superstitious person,” she added.
