Providence College basketball | McGair: Friars charting new course with deeper bench

January 10, 2015

PROVIDENCE – As Providence’s win over Butler earlier in the week illustrated, dishing out minutes is no exact science.

Coaches like Ed Cooley have to consider every factor when concocting a game plan for that day’s opposition. The toughest decisions don’t always boil down to playing zone or man-to-man on defense. There is one consideration that carries prime importance: Ultimately, you play the guys who provide the best chance to win.

Burrillville – Davies girls' basketball | Patriots’ defense paves way for 51-43 win over Broncos

January 10, 2015

LINCOLN  –  You would think head coach Joe Handy would have been thrilled after his Davies Tech players had collected a pivotal 51-43 victory over Burrillville at Gaskin Alumni Hall on Friday night.

After all, his defense allowed only one Bronco – senior center Catherine Keable – to reach double figures in scoring, and forced a whopping 41 turnovers.

Handy, however, seemed disenchanted with the Division III-North triumph.

Cumberland/Lincoln – Mount Girls' Hockey | Lions look sharp in 5-3 triumph over Mounties

January 10, 2015

WOONSOCKET -- To head coach Tom Pereira, something was clearly missing in the first seven games of the season for the Lincoln/Cumberland Co-op team.

That “someone” was prized transfer Samantha Wellington, who made her season debut Friday against ironically her former club, Mount St. Charles. Though the sophomore did not create a ripple on the scorer’s sheet, she impacted the game in other areas in helping the Lions top the Mounties, 5-3, at Adelard Arena.

Lincoln Swimming | Hungry for a bite at a state title, Lady Lions cruise past Cranston East

January 8, 2015

LINCOLN  –  It’s still early in the Division II dual-meet slate, so Lincoln High senior tri-captain Nicole Moneghan isn’t as concerned with her times as she was during her underclassmen years.

Instead, as she’s building toward what she hopes is a premier individual showing at the Rhode Island State Championships in late February, she’s concentrating more on the development of some of the Lions’ younger aquawomen.

The simplistic reason: Moneghan wants to see her school claim a long-awaited state crown.

PawSox | Rich Gedman, Bob Kipper to join coaching staff as hitting, pitching coaches

January 8, 2015

PAWTUCKET – Joining manager Kevin Boles and coach Bruce Crabbe on the 2015 PawSox coaching staff will be a pair of newcomers, hitting coach Rich Gedman and pitching coach Bob Kipper, the team announced Thursday.

Both men take over roles previously held by Dave Joppie and Rich Sauveur, respectively. Joppie will take over hitting-coach duties in Double-A Portland while Sauveur chose to pursue opportunities elsewhere after seven seasons overseeing the Pawtucket pitching staff.

Woonsocket High boys' basketball | Novans' dynamic duo of Vazquez and Lyles lead way in 69-57 win over Saints

January 7, 2015

WOONSOCKET – T.J. Ciolfi’s Villa Novans are quickly earning the reputation as a pick-your-poison team for opponents.

Do you run multiple defenders at 6-foot-5 senior Gary Lyles, who possesses a special blend of athleticism that’s hard for frontcourts to contend with? Or do you elect to concentrate on Elijah Vazquez, a shifty guard who seemingly possesses unlimited range?

Mount St. Charles basketball | Lataille's 20 and 18 leads Mounties past Lions

January 7, 2015

WOONSOCKET  –  During the Christmas break, Mount St. Charles dropped three straight non-league contests, and first-year head coach Henry Coleman knew why.

His team wasn’t crashing the boards or playing team defense like they should be, so spent extra practice time on those issues.

Coleman said he could see that work pay off during the Mounties’ impressive 49-36 non-league victory over Division II foe Lincoln on Wednesday night, to improve to 2-4 overall.
