WOONSOCKET — Highlights have been few and far between this year for Woonsocket, a young squad that has been slowly trying to rebuild its program since the Villa Novans won the Division III-North title three seasons ago.
On Tuesday afternoon, before a small, but energetic gathering at Adelard Arena, all the hard work, sweat, and tears the Villa Novans put into their season nearly paid off in the form of their first victory of the year, but Scituate spoiled their aspirations.

Clippers' Bauer wins two individual events at boys' swimming state meet

PROVIDENCE — Cumberland High senior co-captain Andrew Bauer took a specific but incredibly-optimistic plan into these R.I. Boys Swimming Championships on Monday night.
It was his lofty goal to break his own school mark in the 200-yard freestyle, then set new CHS marks at the 500 distance, not to mention the 50 and 100 freestyles.

Northmen hockey team inches closer to securing playoff berth

NORTH SMITHFIELD -- North Smithfield entered this week knowing full well that if the Northmen wanted to qualify for the Division II playoffs, they would need to produce a win or two over their final three regular-season games.
But at first glance, that seemed to be a chore that was easier said than done. Those three contests – over a five-day span – were against teams with winning records, and two were versus opponents that had already secured a spot in the eight-team tournament that begins on Friday, March 1.

For Cumberland High senior co-captain Courtney Kent, she couldn't have fathomed a better way to close her interscholastic career at the R.I. Girls Swimming Championships, held Saturday afternoon at the recently-finished Brown University natatorium.
Really, who would argue with two individual crowns, not to mention a relay title and a runner-up in another?

Pitts, Crawley track down indoor state titles

PROVIDENCE — It was right around Thanksgiving when Woonsocket High senior Kaylnn “K.K.” Pitts placed all her cards on the table.
“I want to win the [indoor] state championship in the high jump,” is what Pitts set out to obtain, the quote appearing in this very newspaper on Sunday, Nov. 18.
The teenager’s day of reckoning came Saturday afternoon at the Providence Career & Technical Academy field house, site of the R.I. Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Pitts made good on her promise, capturing the high jump crown with a “sudden death” leap of five feet, four inches.

Woonsocket leagues express anger, feelings over proposed fees to use city's fields

WOONSOCKET — Tommy Brien is livid. So are Dave Jarrett and the other volunteers in Woonsocket who run youth and recreational leagues and use the city’s parks and fields.
Brien reported on Thursday night that on the agenda of Monday’s City Council meeting is a proposal to establish fees for those who participate in the recreational programs that utilize the city’s facilities -- charges that could severely cripple the budgets of some of the city’s leagues.

WOONSOCKET --- One bad minute of hockey at the end of the second period turned out to be Mount St. Charles Academy’s undoing on Friday night in its showdown against the No. 7 ranked team in Massachusetts.
Malden Catholic snapped a 1-1 tie by scoring twice in the final 36 seconds of that middle period and held onto its lead through a wild final period en route to a 5-3 victory before a large gathering at Adelard Arena.

WARWICK — It was supposed to be a wild free-for-all, unbeaten Cumberland High battling flawless Bishop Hendricken for bragging rights in the state's top division.
Instead, the Hawks strung together seven straight triumphs between 160 pounds and 106 to sail to a stellar 47-9 dual-meet beatdown of the Clippers at the hosts' gymnasium on Thursday night.

CUMBERLAND — Heidi Josephson is well aware her Cumberland High squads have little to no chance to compete for state crowns at the R.I. Interscholastic Swimming Championships, slated for the new Brown University natatorium on Saturday at 2 p.m. (for girls) and Sunday at 1 (boys).
That doesn't mean the veteran coach isn't truly excited about what could happen when the starter's gun sounds for the first event.
