Mount St. Charles alumni hockey players gather as part of Adelard Arena’s 50th anniversary

WOONSOCKET — So what if it was the morning after Christmas? To the roughly four-dozen former Mount St. Charles hockey players who took to the Adelard Arena surface wearing red or white sweaters, this particular occasion was not about to be missed.

The sight of the Mounties’ glorious skating past coming to life at this time of year is nothing new. In what could be viewed as the perfect appetizer, an alumni game is always staged on the same day that the puck drops on the MSC Holiday Face-Off Hockey Tournament.

CUMBERLAND — Tolman High head coach Mike Kayata admitted to being less than ecstatic about his offense on Thursday night.
His defense, however, was a different story.
Excepting a lull early in the final stanza, that “D” forced most of Lincoln’s 18 turnovers throughout the first half and down the stretch as the Tigers rolled to a 56-40 victory in the first semifinal of the 41st annual Boys & Girls Club of Cumberland/Lincoln Roadshow Holiday Classic at Cumberland High’s Wellness Center.

SMITHFIELD — The future was on display for Cumberland on Thursday afternoon inside Smithfield High’s gymnasium, and judging by the way the Clippers performed in its non-league game against Woonsocket, the future looks very bright for the program.
Freshman guard Julianne Ross delivered her second 10-point output in as many games and sophomore guard Taylor Fay and Sarah Marsland had solid performances as well in the Clippers’ 39-23 victory over the Villa Novans in the opening game of the 27th annual R.I. Board of Officials/Smithfield Boosters Club Holiday Classic.

CUMBERLAND — It wasn’t even close to being an attractive contest, not with a combined 28 turnovers and 27 personal fouls.
Still, head coach Gary Reedy refused to complain after his Cumberland High boys registered what he called a satisfying 53-40 non-league triumph over Toll Gate at The Wellness Center on Monday night.

BURRILLVILLE – Late Friday night, Burrillville/Ponaganset Co-op exhibited masterful play while strolling to a 7-1 upset victory over Mount St. Charles at Adelard Arena, and the girls celebrated the unusual – and somewhat historic – decision with moxie.

Perhaps 17 hours later, head coach Marc Brissette conducted a serious meeting with his troops prior to their Division I/Emma League contest against the South County Co-op Storm inside Levy Arena.

Defending Division III champion Northmen win league hoops opener

WOONSOCKET – This definitely isn’t the same North Smithfield High that rolled to a perfect 24-0 mark in Division III action last winter en route to the state championship.

It nevertheless is formidable, and it showed in the Northmen’s 58-44 D-III season-opening victory at Mount St. Charles on Friday night.

Head coach T.J. Ciolfi’s bunch took advantage of senior center Peter Keenan’s “double-double,” which included a game-high 21 points and 16 rebounds with seven blocks; and its defense, which caused the Mounties a pair of dismal droughts lasting a total of 12:27.

PAWTUCKET — At a time when a host of Boston’s top prospects are stationed in Double-A and Triple-A, the organization arrived at the decision to provide the PawSox coaching staff with an additional voice.

To be clear, Kevin Boles is Pawtucket’s new manager while fellow Triple-A newcomer Bruce Crabbe is classified as coach, not bench coach. The pair will be joined in the trenches by pitching coach Rich Sauveur and hitting coach Dave Joppie, two holdovers from Gary DiSarcina’s staff who will be returning to McCoy Stadium in 2014.
