Cumberland, Tolman net tourney wins

December 27, 2011

CUMBERLAND – By Gary Reedy’s estimation, eight years have elapsed since Cumberland High last captured the Cumberland-Lincoln Boys & Girls Holiday Tournament.
Needless to say, putting an end to such a drought would brighten the Clippers’ spirits heading into the coming year. Cumberland earned the right to play in the championship game after disposing of Woonsocket, 71-63, Tuesday night in the Wellness Center. Junior Ben Bradley paced Cumberland with 19 points along with eight assists and five rebounds.

Mount skates to win in opener

December 27, 2011

WOONSOCKET – Prior to Tuesday night’s opener against St. Joseph’s Collegiate (N.Y.) Institute at its annual Holiday Face-Off Tournament, the last time Mount St. Charles skated against any kind of competition was a league matchup with Moses Brown 11 days ago.
Any signs of rust? Not at all.
The Mounties came out flying from the first period and never let up, rolling to a 5-1 victory over the Marauders at Adelard Arena. Sophomore Tyler Scroggins and senior captain Brian Campbell each scored twice for Mount, which takes on St. Dominic (Maine) Academy in the semifinals tonight at 8.

Lincoln ices Cumberland in tourney finals

December 27, 2011

WARWICK -- Taylor Rego’s goal late in the second overtime period lifted Lincoln to a 3-2 victory over Cumberland in the Toll Gate Holiday Tournament championship game played on Tuesday night at Thayer Arena.
“It took a great shot by Taylor to win this game,” said Lincoln coach Jim Riel. “Taylor ended up being named MVP of the tournament.”
Cumberland took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Michael Kinch. Lincoln took a 2-1 lead after two periods on goals by Nick Zammarelli and Mike Enos but the Clippers stayed strong and tied the game in the third stanza on Andrew Pluta’s goal.

Lincoln wins high-scoring clash vs. Toll Gate

December 26, 2011

WARWICK – Lincoln High is young this season with more than half of its roster consisting of freshmen and sophomores.
According to head coach James Riel, the one thing the Lions do have in their favor is depth.
While Lincoln may still struggle somewhat against the upper-echelon of teams in Division I, Riel envisions his squad being competitive against its other rivals.
The Lions gave evidence of that the past two games.

Clippers edge Huskies, head to tourney finals

December 26, 2011

WARWICK – It was another win for Cumberland High, its sixth straight without a defeat.
But after his Clippers blanked Division III foe Mount Hope, 2-0, in the second game of the Toll Gate Holiday Tournament at Thayer Arena, CHS head coach Mark Andreozzi wasn’t exactly singing praise about his squad.

Co-op teams wave of future in hockey?

December 25, 2011

Some RIIL history was made last March when the Johnston/North Providence team became the first co-op club to win a state championship, doing so when it swept defending champ Mount Hope in their best-of-three Division III title series.
While Johnston/North Providence’s championship didn’t come as much as a surprise -- the team was 14-1-1 during the regular season and the top seed in the playoffs -- it was a bit shocking to see a boys’ co-op squad capture a state crown before a girls’ team.

CVS Charity Golf Classic plays Santa Claus

December 24, 2011

WOONSOCKET – Holiday songs and cheer filled the air at CVS Caremark’s corporate headquarters on Thursday as 64 nonprofit organizations received a much-needed boost from funds generated by the 2011 CVS Caremark Charity Classic. The tournament, Rhode Island’s largest charitable sporting event, this year raised nearly $1.2 million for charities across Rhode Island and Massachusetts, bringing the total funds raised since its inception to more than $15 million.

Mount girls take 7-0 win over Burrillville/Ponaganset

December 24, 2011

WOONSOCKET -- The rematch was a mismatch.
Defending state champion Mount St. Charles, which saw its bid for a perfect regular season come up a game short when the Mounties lost their finale to the Burrillville/Ponaganset co-op team, got a bit of revenge for that defeat in Friday night’s showdown at Adelard Arena.
The Shea sisters, Allison and Caitlin, and Marissa Heroux each scored a pair of goals for Mount in a surprisingly-lopsided 7-0 triumph over the Broncos, a game the hosts dominated from start to finish.

Evangelista, Northmen girls shut down Lions, 4-0

December 23, 2011

WOONSOCKET --- She didn’t have to turn in the same remarkable effort she did in her 58-save performance against Mount St. Charles last weekend, but Britney Evangelista was still outstanding in net for North Smithfield in Friday night’s meeting with Lincoln.
The sophomore netminder turned away 32 shots and frustrated one of the top lines in the state to help the Northmen claim a 4-0 triumph over the first-year Lions at Adelard Arena and snap a five-game losing streak.

Fugere nets 1,000th point in Novans' loss to Eagles

December 22, 2011

WOONSOCKET — Turnovers will hurt you.
When you do it against an evenly-matched team, it will often be the difference in the game.
Woonsocket High committed more than its share of mental miscues on Thursday night and suffered its first loss of the season, convincingly, as visiting Barrington left Savaria Gymnasium with a 51-32 victory in an intense Division I contest. The Eagles work underneath the basket on both ends of the court was particularly troublesome for the Villa Novans.
