Mounties fall to red-hot Lions, 3-1

October 21, 2011

LINCOLN — On paper, there’s not much that separates the top two teams in Division II-North – Lincoln High and Mount St. Charles Academy.
On the field Friday afternoon, the numbers didn’t lie.
The first-place Lions scored all of the offense it would need and then held off a very-determined Mount squad in the second half to post a 3-1 win at Manville Park.
With three games left on its schedule, the victory improved Lincoln’s league record to 14-1-0 and all but secured it the II-North crown. The second-place Mounties dropped to 10-2-0 with still six games remaining.

Cumberland boys deliver at Bronco Invitational

October 20, 2011

BURRILLVILLE — Tom Kenwood gave a promise to his Cumberland High squad before competing at the annual Bronco Invitational. If four of his runners could crack 17 minutes on the event’s five-kilometer course at Burrillville Middle School, he would shave off his beard.
Kenwood didn’t have to get out his razor after Thursday’s meet, but he almost did.

Lincoln couple competes in Wife Carrying event

October 20, 2011

When Bruce and Sheri Foster said “I do” eight years ago, they probably never thought they would one day decide to do something as wild and crazy as the competition they entered two weekends ago.
The Lincoln couple was one of 47 that participated in the Sunday River Ski Resort’s 12th annual North American Wife Carrying Championships in Newry, Maine. They toured the challenging 283-yard obstacle course in a 1:27.37 time that placed them 27th and just eight seconds shy of a top-20 finish.

Burrillville girls win Div. III showdown with SRA, 4-0

October 20, 2011

PAWTUCKET – As St. Raphael Academy discovered on Thursday night, there’s a reason why Burrillville has surrendered a division-low seven goals this season.
Defense is the name of the Broncos’ game, which was made plenty clear as the Saints were grounded, 4-0, at the McKinnon-Alves Complex. The shutout is No. 11 for Burrillville, which hasn’t allowed a goal in seven straight games dating back to Sept. 23.

Ponaganset hosts Tolman at high noon on Saturday

October 19, 2011

At the end of November, these could be potential semifinal-round playoff contests, but this weekend, they are merely two regular-season games that highlight the Blackstone Valley’s high school schedule.
In what may arguably be the game of the weekend in the entire state, East Providence heads to Warwick on Friday for a 7 p.m. showdown of 3-1 squads with defending Division I champ Bishop Hendricken at the Hawks’ Hayden Field. Both teams are in a three-way tie for second place with Cranston West (3-1) and right behind La Salle (4-0).
