Mount girls edge Bay View, 3-2

February 4, 2011

WEST WARWICK --- In a season full of lopsided victories, Friday night’s showdown at the West Warwick Civic Center with longtime rival Bay View was a welcomed sight for Mount St. Charles.
And so was the end result, a 3-2 win by the defending state champions that saw them dominate play for most of the contest, play excellent defense, and remain perfect in a dozen games.

La Salle hands Mount first loss of season

February 4, 2011

WARWICK – For the past 12 league games, Mount St. Charles Academy has punished most of its opponents in Division I, averaging about seven goals an outing.
Not this time.
La Salle Academy avenged its earlier shellacking to the Mounties on Friday night to give its rival its first setback of the winter with a thrilling 3-0 victory at Thayer Arena. The Rams received an outstanding effort from goalie Joseph Noonan to earn their shut out win. Playing his first game since suffering an injury on New Year’s Day, Noonan turned away 27 shots by the Mounties.

Cumberland wrestlers take down Cranston West

February 3, 2011

CRANSTON — Two of the four heavyweight programs in Division I squared off on Thursday night. Cumberland and Cranston West threw haymakers at each other all night with the defending state champion Clippers getting off the deck to win a 36-28 slugfest.
Cumberland scored five pins, worth six points each in the team scoring, to a pair of deck jobs for the Falcons. Those pins, especially the ones scored by Brandon Ferreri and Tom Lacroix after Cranston West had taken a 25-21 lead after 160 pounds, proved the difference in this topsy-turvy match.

Woonsocket girls hoop team routs Lincoln

February 3, 2011

WOONSOCKET — Woonsocket High coach George Coderre likes the way his team has been playing lately with the postseason only a month away. The Villa Novans’ 57-33 rout of Lincoln High on Thursday night was the latest example.
The win by the Novans improves their record to 7-4 in Division I. It also comes just two days after Coderre’s crew lost a tight 52-51 decision to second-place Bay View Academy, a Bengal squad that demolished Woonsocket, 49-24, in its league opener back on Dec. 9.

Akinrola's making the grade at RIC

February 2, 2011

PROVIDENCE — Woonsocket’s Mike Akinrola is making a big impact on Rhode Island College’s basketball team this season.
The 6-foot-6 junior is averaging 14.3 points per game. He was named Little East Conference Co-Player of the Week last week after averaging 21.5 points and five rebounds in two games.

Trust is lost when verbal commitment is taken back

February 2, 2011

There’s a scene in Jerry Maguire in which Jerry, the do-anything-at-all-costs agent, is going over the particulars with Matt Cushman, father of quarterback and surefire top pick Frank. Besides appeasing his pseudo clients with dollar figures and draft stature, Jerry aims for some reassurance from the Cushman camp that he will be entrusted with the negotiations with the NFL team that selects Frank.
Matt Cushman closes the discussion with a firm handshake along with the following: “What you have is my whole word, and it’s stronger than oak.”

CHS grapplers still going strong

February 1, 2011

CUMBERLAND — Another snow day, another lost practice session for Cumberland High’s wrestling team.
“This makes me very uncomfortable,” Cumberland coach Steve Gordon was saying on Tuesday morning as another snowstorm hit the region. “I don’t have any control over the kids’ weights when we can’t practice. But my guys know what to do. They are pretty good about it. Some of them will go over to Northeast Elite (a wrestling school in Woonsocket) and get a workout in. We can’t practice at the school because if school is cancelled, it’s over. You can’t practice.”

Cumberland's 'D' gets an 'A'

February 1, 2011

CUMBERLAND — There may be a ‘D’ at the end of Cumberland, but when it comes to the high school’s hockey team, the ‘D’ has been front and center for the past several seasons.
After 11 games, the Clippers have surrendered a division-low 17 goals, and news of them being atop this department shouldn’t be anything new to those who follow the Division II circuit.

Pitts leads Woonsocket to division track title

January 31, 2011

PROVIDENCE --- Woonsocket High earned the dual-meet crown in the Dwyer Division with a sweep of Ponaganset and West Warwick. The Villa Novans, last year’s divisional champions, concluded a perfect 8-0 season in the league.
“One of the goals this year was to try and go undefeated,” said WHS coach Dan Richard. “I am not sure a Woonsocket girls’ team has ever done that in indoor. That was one of the goals. We got some new girls out this year that helped. It’s been a good year. They worked hard in practice and stayed focused on what we needed to do.”
