Mount ices Hendricken, 3-1

WOONSOCKET --- The defense that played in spurts and gave up 10 goals during a sloppy two-game stretch last weekend took a huge turn for the better on Friday night in Mount St. Charles’ showdown with Bishop Hendricken.
Derek Deschene’s goal off a pass from Shamus Maloney with 4:50 to go in the second period snapped a 1-1 tie, and goaltender Dan Foster turned in an outstanding 32-save performance to help the Mounties grab a 3-1 victory in this marquee matchup at Adelard Arena.

New era dawns for Cumberland swimmers

CUMBERLAND --– For the past four decades, the face of Cumberland High swimming has been Bruce Calvert. During his long tenure as the Clippers’ head coach, he produced an abundance of all-state athletes and a combined 13 state crowns (boy and girls).
Calvert no longer patrols the CHS pool, retiring from his longtime post in November only a few months after doing the same as the school’s aquatic director.

For some boys' squads, the writing’s on the wall that their seasons will come to a close some time in mid-February. Lincoln hockey team ties La Salle

SMITHFIELD --- Chalk this tie up for the public schools.
Junior Paul Bruscini’s first goal of the year and senior goalie Cody Phillips’ marvelous 35-save performance enabled Lincoln High to grab a 1-1 tie with Division I foe La Salle Academy late Monday night in a rare home game for the Lions at the Smithfield Ice Rink.
Before this draw, there were 19 Division I games that pitted public schools against parochial schools and the parochials captured all 19 meetings, 12 of them by six or more goals.

Cumberland wrestlers host own tourney on Saturday

CUMBERLAND – Wrestling season inside the state of Rhode Island doesn’t really get serious until the middle of January. A few of the top teams use the first six weeks of the season to test themselves outside the state in weekend tournaments against elite competition from around New England.
That’s the route Cumberland High coach Steve Gordon has chosen over the years. This season, his defending state champions have won tournaments in Connecticut and Massachusetts before finishing third last Saturday in the prestigious Redskin Invitational up in Sanford, Maine.

WOONSOCKET – It’s bad enough that the wins have come at a minimum this season – one league victory in the first seven games to be exact.
Now, head coach Kyle Ivey-Jones and his Woonsocket High squad are playing with somewhat of a depleted roster. Minus a handful of players that have decided to call it quits this winter, including starting guard Jessie Charette, the Villa Novans came up short once again on Monday night.
