Clippers skate into D-II semifinals

March 7, 2011

WOONSOCKET --- Cumberland High and the Division II semifinals have gone hand-in-hand for the better part of last decade, and that trend’s going to continue this weekend.
Michael Kinch’s multiple-goal night and goalie Michaelangelo Federici’s 33-save effort were the keys to success for the Clippers on Monday night in their 4-2 victory over Pilgrim High in the third and deciding game of their best-of-three quarterfinal-round series at Adelard Arena.

North Smithfield girls lose in OT

March 7, 2011

PROVIDENCE - When North Smithfield and Central played each other during the league season, the two Division III squads split their two games with both teams winning on their home court by single digits.
Head coach David Ruff didn't anticipate anything but an all-out battle when his second-seeded Northmen matched against the No. 3 Knights in Monday's semifinal matchup at Rhode Island College.
Ruff got exactly what he expected, but his only wish was that the numbers on the scoreboard were a little different.

Davies loses one-pointer to Middletown

March 7, 2011

PROVIDENCE – There were not too many onlookers that figured Monday night’s Division III semifinal contest would be a close affair.
The late game pitted top-ranked Middletown, a team with just one loss on its record, versus No. 5 seed Davies Tech, a .500 ballclub.
Add the fact that the Islanders defeated the Patriots by 26 points in their last meeting on Feb. 24.
A blowout certainly seemed inevitable, but head coach Gerry Suggs and his gutsy squad never let it happen.

PC officials should look into forming search committee for next coach

March 6, 2011

An open letter to Providence College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley and Athletic Director Bob Driscoll:

When the search for the next men’s basketball coach commences, do not make the same mistake you did the last time. Many people were leery when Keno Davis was given the keys to the school’s primary means of visibility and exposure. Not just because Davis had all of one year of coaching experience under his belt, but also for the simple reason that he was far from the top choice to replace Tim Welsh.

Mounties roll past Mt. Hope in Div. II quarters

March 6, 2011

PROVIDENCE — The drama from Mount St. Charles Academy’s Division II postseason opener was nowhere to be found in the Mounties’ quarterfinal-round game against Mount Hope High on Sunday night.
Senior forward Maria Saia’s game-high 21 points, eight rebounds, and three steals led the charge for the Mounties as they cruised to a 56-34 victory over the Huskies at Rhode Island College’s Murray Center.

MSC sweeps Smithfield, Belisle earns win No. 900

March 5, 2011

SMITHFIELD — Mount St. Charles received a nice double treat on Saturday night.
The top-seeded defending champs wrapped up a best-of-three series Division I quarterfinal-round sweep of eight-seeded Smithfield High on Saturday night by cruising to a 4-1 score before a large gathering at the Smithfield Ice Rink.

North Smithfield skaters sweep La Salle Academy

March 5, 2011

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Two players who combined to score just five goals during the regular season came up huge with the two biggest goals of the year for North Smithfield High on Saturday night.
Lauren Ledoux’s game-tying goal with 7:57 to play in the game and Samantha Archambault’s game-winner with 1:02 to go led the Northmen to their second 3-2 triumph in as many nights and a best-of-three quarterfinal-round sweep of La Salle Academy at the Rhode Island Sports Center.

La Salle routs defending titlist Woonsocket, 61-33

March 5, 2011

PROVIDENCE — The time seemed appropriate for reflection, not reliving the course of events that transpired Saturday afternoon on the campus of Rhode Island College.
Certainly it wasn’t the ending George Coderre and his proud Woonsocket squad envisioned. A La Salle team that was superior in just about every tangible category ended the Villa Novans’ glorious run at the top, 61-33, in the Division I quarterfinals. The game pitted last year’s championship combatants, with the Novans taking the title by a 40-34 count.

Lady Broncos rout Warwick in playoff opener

March 4, 2011

BURRILLVILLE – The expected quarterfinal mismatch occurred at Levy Rink Friday night as No. 3 seed Burrillville/Ponaganaset co-op skated to a routine 6-1 decision over sixth-seeded Warwick co-op. Junior Kelsey Koprusak and senior Katie Couture each scored twice for the Lady Broncos.
But if the inevitable happens and the Broncos take the series and advance to a semifinal date with powerhouse Bay View Academy early next week, head coach Gary Rouleau is hoping to see a much better effort than their playoff opener.
