Cumberland holds off Warwick

February 16, 2011

CUMBERLAND — The Cumberland High wrestling program runs as deep as the roots head coach Steve Gordon has nurtured in this town since moving here nearly 50 years ago.
The Clippers finished their second straight undefeated dual-meet season on Wednesday night with a 37-20 spanking of equally unbeaten Warwick Veterans, which was the favored team heading into this showdown between Division I’s two elite squads.

Woonsocket girls stop Smithfield

February 15, 2011

WOONSOCKET --- On “Teacher Appreciation Night” at Woonsocket High, it seemed only fitting that the Novans taught Smithfield High a couple of lessons in rebounding and defense in their Division I-North rematch on Tuesday.
Junior forward Kailey Fugere scored a game-high 19 points, senior center Ashley Dubois added 16, and the duo also teamed up to rip down 28 rebounds to help the Novans avenge an earlier loss to the Sentinels and soar to an impressive 57-37 triumph.

Mounties host Catholic Memorial this afternoon

February 15, 2011

WOONSOCKET --- Not many high school hockey coaches get their kicks out of putting together a non-league schedule as grueling and competitive as the one Mount St. Charles Academy coach Dave Belisle rolls out every year.
He always starts it off with the team’s annual post-Christmas Holiday Face-Off tournament, which attracts some of the best talent in the Northeast. He then sprinkles in a couple of tough opponents over the next 4-5 weeks, such as two-time Connecticut state champion Hamden High last Wednesday.

February 15, 2011

CUMBERLAND -- Tonight marks the beginning of the best 10-day stretch in Rhode Island wrestling this year. It starts with a battle between two unbeaten high school programs. Defending state champion Cumberland will host 2010 runnerup Warwick Veterans tonight at The Wellness Center with the regular season dual-meet title at stake.

No shortage of contenders for state indoor track meet

February 14, 2011

There’s never too little to write about when it comes to the Blackstone Valley region and the indoor track & field state championships.
This weekend’s meet, however, may border on the ridiculous. In fact, when it comes to its conclusion roughly four hours after its early 10 o’clock start on Saturday morning, there’s a good chance I’ll develop a mild case of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Mount icemen clinch share of regular season title

February 13, 2011

BURRILLVILLE – Mount St. Charles scored five goals in the third period on Saturday night to break open a competitive contest and send the Mounties to an 8-1 victory over Burrillville.
The Mounties led 3-0 after two periods before blowing the game wide open in the final stanza. Mike Magerman, Trevor Plante and Ryan Berard each scored two goals for Mount, which is now 14-1-1 on the season with two games left on the league schedule.

Burrillville/Ponaganset co-op team excels on ice

February 12, 2011

BURRILLVILLE — When it comes to the public school teams, there aren’t too many folks in the state who are as big as fan of them as longtime coach Gary Rouleau.
That being noted, you can’t blame Rouleau if he’s been particularly excited about the truly outstanding season his Burrillville/Ponaganset co-op team is enjoying this winter.
The Broncos, who skated to an easy 7-0 triumph over the Barrington/Mount Hope co-op squad on Saturday night at the Cranston Ice Rink, have won five games in a row and sit in second place in the standings with a 10-2 record.

Novan girls place fourth at Large School meet

February 12, 2011

PROVIDENCE — It's not all about winning state championships.
With an emerging track and field program like the Woonsocket High girls, it's all about taking it one meet, one year at a time.
The Villa Novans, who last week copped their second straight league tile in the Dwyer Division, took another positive step forward on Saturday afternoon at the Providence Athletic Facility. Competing in the hard-as-nails Large School Championship, Woonsocket finished fourth among the nine schools with a solid 51.5 points.

Mounties blank Moses Brown, 6-0

February 11, 2011

WOONSOCKET --- The rematch contained half as many goals and not as much drama as the first meeting, but it did give Mount St. Charles Academy something the team was unable to grab its first time out with Moses Brown.
A lopsided victory.
The Mounties produced three power-play goals and two shorthanded scores and put a firm grasp on their lead in the Division I standings on Friday night by skating to an impressive 6-0 win over second-place Moses Brown before a large gathering at Adelard Arena.
