Burrillville gridders see playoff hopes end

November 13, 2010

MIDDLETOWN --- Burrillville High’s bid for a Division III playoff berth came up short on Friday night in its “must-win” duel with Middletown High at the Gaudet Middle School.
The host Islanders were able to snuff a two-point conversion by the Broncos that would have tied the score with 30 seconds to play in the contest, and in the process, they were able to hold on for a wild 28-26 victory.

Northmen tune up for playoffs with easy win over C.F.

November 13, 2010

CENTRAL FALLS --- It was of North Smithfield High head coach Wes Pugh-Pennington's volition to treat his Division IV showdown against Central Falls High on Friday night as a road playoff game.
“Our plan was to keep it simple,” he stated. “We knew it was their Homecoming, so we wanted to use this as preparation for the playoffs. We knew we'd see a tough C.F. Team come in and play hard, so we wanted to run the ball, mix it up and gain some yardage. But we also wanted to prove that we're North Smithfield, we're no fluke, and that we come to play football.”

Lincoln edges Mount, advances to D-II title match

November 12, 2010

CRANSTON --- Defense is the main reason why Lincoln High captured the Division II-North title this year.
And if the Lions plan to seize the Division II state championship on Sunday afternoon, they are going to need the same excellent defense they displayed throughout the season and in Thursday night’s semifinal-round game against Mount St. Charles Academy.
Junior striker Jillian DeSimone scored her team-high 16th of the season and the Lions’ defense held off a furious second-half attack by the high-scoring Mounties en route to a 1-0 victory at Cranston Stadium.

Woonsocket boxer faces old pal tonight at Twin River

November 12, 2010

LINCOLN --- For the first time in his pro career, Woonsocket’s Joe Gardner will be fighting for a championship belt, and he will try to claim his prize in the six-round co-feature of tonight’s CES’s (Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc.) “Homecoming King” card at the Twin River Event Center.
And for the first time since coming back to the sport in May after a 7½-year absence, Gardner has had to prepare for a fight without his favorite sparring partner, West Warwick’s Keith Kozlin, giving him some valuable rounds.

Novans ready for football playoffs

November 11, 2010

For Tolman, Woonsocket, and St. Raphael, the Division II’s ‘second season’ begins this weekend. For Burrillville and East Providence, their pursuit at a second season continues.
Five Blackstone Valley teams will try to extend their respective seasons past Thanksgiving this week when the Division II quarterfinal round takes place and the Division I and III regular seasons ramble down the home stretch.

Coia signs on with URI

November 11, 2010

PROVIDENCE — The gangly young girl who was taller than most of her teachers in eighth grade at North Smithfield Middle School signed a pretty important document on Wednesday morning.
Corinne Coia, now a 6-foot-4 senior at The Lincoln School, signed her letter of intent to attend the University of Rhode Island next year on a full basketball scholarship.

Prout spikes MSC in five-set semifinal thriller

November 10, 2010

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Talent and overall heart.
That has been the cornerstone to Mount St. Charles Academy’s sterling debut into the Division I ranks this fall, one that included an undefeated 14-0 league mark in I-North and a 16-0 regular-season record.
To no one’s surprise, those two attributes were on full display during the top-seeded Mounties’ semifinal match with the Prout School on Tuesday night.
Only this time, it wouldn’t prove enough.

Lincoln girls top N.S. in Div. II quarterfinals

November 10, 2010

LINCOLN – You could say the elements helped even the playing field between Lincoln and North Smithfield. With a steady rain sweeping across Chet Nichols Field, Tuesday’s Division II quarterfinal match became a matter of survival.
Thanks to two goals in the final nine minutes, the Lions emerged from this mud bath with a 2-0 victory over the Northmen, who played the game minus the services of head coach Steve DeMeo. DeMeo was relieved of his coaching duties after Monday’s arrest for allegedly transmitting inappropriate messages to a minor.

For Paterno, wins and age are just numbers

November 9, 2010

It was great to see Joe Paterno collect his 400th career victory at Penn State on Saturday. I was in the neighborhood for many of the first 120 back in my college days and early sports writing years. It wasn’t always easy dealing with a man who set such high standards for himself and his program. Paterno kept everyone on their toes, beginning with his players and going right down the list, all the way down to the lowest creatures on earth … the sports writing fraternity.
