Little League Baseball | Toro's second HR of the game helps Lincoln top Portsmouth in state tourney opener

July 25, 2015

WARWICK – Nick Toro had a penchant for pounding home runs in the R.I. Little League Major Division (11-12) District IV Tournament, one in which the Lincoln All-Stars swept with relative ease, and he picked up where he left off Saturday afternoon.

The congenial Toro, who already had walloped a three-run dinger, ripped what proved to be the game-clinching blast in the top of the seventh inning to deliver to Lincoln an absolutely thrilling 5-4 triumph over District II champ Portsmouth in the opener of the state tourney at Warwick Continental Little League’s Louis M. D’Abrosca Memorial Field.

Pawtucket Red Sox | PawSox' Marrero eager to employ lessons learned while with Red Sox

July 24, 2015

PAWTUCKET – When heralded PawSox shortstop Deven Marrero – known for his innate skills with the leather – was called up to the parent club back on June 25, he was naturally elated with the opportunity ahead of him.

The six-foot-one, 195-pound native of Miami, Fla. and former star at Arizona State University didn't fare too well with the bat in five appearances with Boston, manufacturing a .143 bating average (1-for-7), though did record his first major-league hit and run scored against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim hurler Mike Morin on July 28.

Amateur Baseball | Lincoln's Zammarelli named to Cape Cod League All-Star team

July 20, 2015

As far as college baseball offseason leagues go, there’s no bigger or brighter stage than the by-invitation-only, wooden-bat Cape Cod League.

For Nick Zammarelli, a Lincoln native and 2013 graduate of Lincoln High School, it’s a great opportunity for him to showcase his skills in advance of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft.

Little League Baseball | Woonsocket edged 2-1 in District IV final by Smithfield

July 18, 2015

WOONSOCKET  –  Perhaps the most amazing – and disappointing – statistic for the Woonsocket All-Stars in this R.I. Little League District IV Major Division Tournament losers’ bracket final late Friday night came in the “LOB” category.

Through the first four innings alone, the locals stranded seven, with five in scoring position and two at third base.

Road Racing | 8th annual Doyle Classic, slated for Aug. 9, drawing record participation

July 18, 2015

One of the struggles that cross-country and track & field teams often encounter during their seasons is coming up with ways to raise funds to pay for expenses that are generally not covered through the school’s sport budget; those much-needed expenses that are often used for such things as uniforms and/or equipment as well as travel and entry fees for important, out-of-state meets.

Boys' Basketball | Mount hosting summer hoops league is a slam dunk

July 17, 2015

WOONSOCKET – Lincoln High varsity hoop head coach Kent Crooks was disappointed when the annual North Providence Summer Boys’ Basketball League folded in late spring.

“This is my 13th year at Lincoln, and we played in the old Pawtucket/Central Falls league years ago, then in North Providence, which had one for over 40 years before it shut down,” he stated. “I was worried, ‘Where will the kids get a chance to hone their skills?’ but when this came about, I was thrilled.”
