PAWTUCKET — During the regular season, Pawtucket Red Sox righty Matt Barnes was 2-1 in three starts with a bloated 7.18 ERA.
 
But any resemblance between the regular-season Barnes and the post-season Barnes was pure coincidence.

PAWTUCKET -- Garin Cecchini didn’t exactly crush the ball in the 10th inning Wednesday night. But his three-hop single over a drawn-in infield gave the Pawtucket Red Sox a 2-1 victory over the Syracuse Chiefs in  Game 1 of a best-of-five Governors’ Cup semifinal series.

Game 2 is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Thursday with a pair of right-handers on the mound – Syracuse’s Scott McGregor (1-2, 3.91 ERA) and Pawtucket’s Matt Barnes (8-9, 3.95 ERA).

PAWTUCKET – The Pawtucket Red Sox will vie for their second Governors’ Cup crown in three years when they takes on International League-North Division champion Syracuse in a five-game semifinal set to begin tonight at 7:05 at McCoy Stadium.
 
The PawSox earned a club-record fourth straight post-season appearance when they clinched the wild card berth on Sunday.

PAWTUCKET – Ten years have gone by since Thomas “The Souljah” Falowo first laced up a pair of boxing gloves, and this weekend in Las Vegas the Pawtucket-based pro will bring to bear every bit of that experience as he steps onto the biggest stage of his career.

Falowo, 12-2-0 (8 KO) in his fourth year as a professional, will make his television debut on Saturday night, taking on highly-touted Romanian-born prospect Ronald “The Thrill” Gavril at the Palms Resort Casino.

Loaning of football equipment no longer permitted; Interscholastic League profited slightly from postseason tournaments

PROVIDENCE – What started out as a conversation between Rhode Island Interscholastic League officials has resulted in the striking of a rule that pertains to the loaning of football equipment during the summertime.

Tom Mezzanotte, RIIL executive director, brought what he felt was a serious matter to the attention of the R.I. Principals’ Committee on Athletics during last week’s meeting. Upon holding discussions with the medical community and the RIIL’s attorney, Mezzanotte recommended to the PCOA that the practice of high schools lending equipment cease immediately.
