North Smithfield Softball | Lady Northmen battle to the last out but fall 2-1 to N. Providence

June 14, 2015

PROVIDENCE – You create your own luck, and that’s exactly what the North Smithfield softball team tried to do Sunday afternoon with a spot in the Division II finals on the line.

North Providence responded in calm and cool nature, making defensive plays that took the air out of the Northmen’s attack. It was a scene that repeated several times and represented a major reason why the Cougars emerged from the losers’ bracket with a 2-1 victory.

North Smithfield-Davies Tech Softball | Pasquariello, Northmen bounce Patriots from Div. II Playoffs

June 13, 2015

PROVIDENCE — Jen Pasquariello can almost be described as North Smithfield head coach Paul Mercier’s pet project.

“She’s not a starter. She’s somebody who needed to be pushed and kind of wake up a little bit,” said Mercier. “You’ve got to show the coaching staff during practices that you want to be out there.”

It reached the point where Mercier sat down with Pasquariello as the regular season drew to a close. Since the coach-to-player moment, the naturally skilled Pasquariello has done everything within her power to reward Mercier’s faith in her.

Mount St. Charles Baseball | Lataille shines as Mounties earn spot in Division II finals

June 11, 2015

EAST PROVIDENCE – According to Mount St. Charles head coach Tom Seaver, the starting pitchers for Thursday night’s Division II Regional Pod II final know each other quite well. MSC’s Alex Lataille and his counterpart from Prout, Mason Feole, are teammates on the same summer baseball team.

Lincoln Baseball | LION TAMERS: Levin, Lions send Coventry packing from Div. I playoffs

June 9, 2015

LINCOLN – Alex Levin knew there was going to be a celebration, but not the extent.

Mere seconds after he himself recorded the final out, Lincoln High’s starters rushed him from their positions and the subs poured out of the dugout with a single mission: Piling onto Levin, then standing near the hill.

“I had to squeeze my catcher (senior Jake Petrin) from underneath; I kept saying, ‘Get ‘em off me – now!’” Levin grinned afterward. “I couldn’t breathe.”

Mount St. Charles Baseball | Mounties prevail in back-and-forth 14-13 affair against Crusaders

June 8, 2015

WOONSOCKET – Mount St. Charles and The Prout School are certainly no strangers to exciting and memorable Division II playoff encounters. Who can forget the 2009 finals at McCoy Stadium that saw the Mounties earn the title with an eight-inning, walk-off win in Game 2?

How about the 2010 finals between the same two teams that saw MSC respond from a Game 1 setback to capture the next two?

June 6, 2015

NORTH SMITHFIELD – The mission couldn’t be any clearer for head coach Jeff Crins and his North Smithfield volleyball squad.

June 6, 2015

For the first time in decades, Rhode Island Interscholastic League brass chose to conduct its annual state Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Brown Stadium not on the first Sunday in June but the initial Saturday.

Cumberland Girls Track | Clippers still aim for strong showing at states despite standout Scullin sitting out

June 6, 2015

The day was May 13. The scene was the outdoor track at Cranston West. The meet was the Girls’ Northern Division Championship.

On that cool spring afternoon, Cumberland junior Meaghan Scullin distinguished herself by capturing three events, the high jump (5-1), triple jump (35-5 1⁄4), and 400 (:59.7). She also grabbed second in the long jump (16-10 3⁄4), an event she won at this past winter’s indoor state meet.
