Holt's durability isn't lost on PawSox

June 25, 2014

PAWTUCKET — There have been three editions to Paul Dickson’s handy and comprehensive “The Dickson Baseball Dictionary,” though no revised version has graced bookstore shelves in the past five years.

If and when Dickson gets around to updating the game’s vernacular – 952 pages of words and phrases suggests that the author has covered all the bases (no pun intended) – he should make it a point to insert the full name of the Red Sox’ current version of a Swiss Army knife: Brock Holt.

Van Pelt, Stricker repeat as CVS Caremark Charity Classic champions

June 24, 2014

BARRINGTON — If PGA stalwarts Steve Stricker and Bo Van Pelt had their way, they'd return to the CVS Caremark Charity Classic every summer.
The only problem? Given the duo's remarkable success at Rhode Island Country Club over the past two years, tournament co-hosts and local favorites Brad Faxon and Billy Andrade joked about their possible return after a wildly-entertaining finish early Tuesday afternoon.
When asked if there was anything he would change about the event, Faxon grinned, “I wouldn't invite Stricker back. He's too good.”

Even with newfound attention, PawSox's Betts remains as cool as ever

June 24, 2014

PAWTUCKET — It wasn’t Mookie Betts’ intention to create a firestorm. Thanks to his strong play since joining the PawSox three weeks ago coupled with Red Sox manager John Farrell’s impromptu “I know Mookie Betts is swinging the bat well” remark last weekend, the 21-year-old wunderkind is being seen in a different light.

In response to the attention that goes with the territory of being the flavor of the moment, Betts sought out Kevin Boles. The last thing Betts wanted to do was to make the life of the PawSox manager even more chaotic.

Victorino hopes to play nine innings with PawSox before heading back to Boston

June 24, 2014

PAWTUCKET — In the world of target dates and timetables, Shane Victorino’s bid to rejoin the Red Sox during the team’s current West Coast sojourn came up well short.

With Wednesday marking the final game of a three-game set in Seattle, the best that Victorino can hope for is a return this weekend in New York. In order reach the point where the Red Sox feel comfortable enough to activate him, it’s safe to say that the outfielder will have to withstand the challenge of playing nine innings.

Crowded leaderboard atop CVS Caremark Charity Classic

June 23, 2014

BARRINGTON – Peter Jacobsen found himself in an unusual position when the first round of the 16th annual CVS Caremark Charity Classic ended Monday afternoon.

The former PGA star and playing partner Jimmy Walker manufactured a nine-under 62 at Rhode Island Country Club, and he admitted being tied for the lead – with the defending champion tandem of Steve Stricker and Bo Van Pelt – was a spot he didn't anticipate.

“What was our secret? I don't know, except maybe my youngest daughter (Kristen Sahler) is in the hospital (in Greenwich, Conn.); she's in labor, so maybe that's it,” he smiled.

North East Elite Wrestling Club a family affair

June 21, 2014

WOONSOCKET – Justin Switzer admitted his initial two years at Woonsocket High, those in 2005 and '06, were at the very least problematic.

He had wanted to compete on the Villa Novans' wrestling team, but he missed most of his freshman season because he was deemed academically ineligible. He didn't even practice as a sophomore for the same reason.

Roger Dodger: Mount alum Hayward signs minor-league deal with Los Angeles

June 20, 2014

When Vaughn Hayward walked off the mound at Connecticut’s Dodd Stadium on May 24, part of him was resigned to the possibility that he had thrown his last pitch in a competitive game.

That spring afternoon featured the collegiate Hayward at his finest for Bryant University. With the Northeast Conference championship and a berth to the NCAA Tournament on the line, the senior flummoxed the Sacred Heart hitters with 6.1 shutout innings while scattering five hits. It looked like a chance to go out on top, as Hayward did not make an appearance in either of the Bulldogs’ NCAA games.

Coming to fruition: Girls' basketball to feature open tournament

June 19, 2014

PROVIDENCE – After several years of watching Rhode Island high school boys’ basketball crown one undisputed state champion and do so with mostly positive reviews, the girls’ hoops community is officially prepared to follow suit.

Even in defeat, North Smithfield '9' have plenty to be proud of

June 18, 2014

PAWTUCKET – If his parents, or any others, could have heard the words spoken by North Smithfield High senior quad-captain/shortstop Dylan Narodowy inside McCoy Stadium late Wednesday afternoon, they would've expressed joy.

The Northmen had just sustained a more-than-crushing 3-1 loss to top-ranked East Providence in Game Two of a best-of-three R.I. Division II Tournament championship final set, but Narodowy maintained his poise.

His dream of earning a state title over, he remained a rock.

Townies take advantage of mistake-prone Northmen, grab Game 1 of Division II baseball finals

June 17, 2014

PAWTUCKET – Call it crazy, but North Smithfield High head coach Jon Leddy seemed rather upbeat while walking through the McCoy Stadium grass behind the plate on Tuesday afternoon.

His club had just dropped an at-times ugly, 5-2 decision to top-seeded East Providence in the opener of the best-of-three R.I. Division II Tournament championship set before a crowd of at least 500, but the calm seemingly came from the fact he knew why.
