PAWTUCKET – “Everything is out of my control. I just play ball.”

So said Jackie Bradley Jr. earlier this month at PawSox Media Day, but the outfielder most likely did in fact exert some control over his promotion to the major leagues on Tuesday, with his run of excellent play throughout the month of April.

LINCOLN  –  Just a month ago, North Smithfield High collected the R.I. Division II Hockey Tournament championship with a two-game sweep of South Kingstown, and senior Jake Decelles played a pivotal role in it.

Now he’s a member of the North Smithfield golf team, and admitted he’s trying to do the same on the links as he did on the ice.

PROVIDENCE – A mini-celebration erupted at the intersection of Eaton St. and River Ave. the moment Providence College sent out a release regarding Kris Dunn’s desire to put the NBA on hold and remain a Friar for a little bit longer.

“I thought about not having him a lot,” said coach Ed Cooley. “It would have been a totally different team without him.”

WOONSOCKET – Inside the Mount St. Charles dugout after the top of the sixth inning, sophomore righty Emily Durand made a reasonable request to her teammates.

With the Mounties guarding a 3-2 lead over Division I-North nemesis Cumberland High, Durand asked only, “Get me some insurance runs, please!”

They didn’t then, but responded when they needed to most.

PROVIDENCE – Turns out the most important 2015 recruit in Ed Cooley’s sights is staying put at Providence College.

The NBA can wait for Kris Dunn, who on Friday ended a month’s worth of speculation by announcing that he is returning to the Friars for his redshirt junior season. Dunn still has two years of playing eligibility remaining, but academically he will be a senior who in one year is scheduled to graduate with a degree in social science.

PAWTUCKET – Veteran head coach Tom Seaver couldn’t help but laugh as he watched his Mount St. Charles players enter the first-base gate to McCoy Stadium’s splendor on Friday morning.

“We got here at 10 a.m., an hour before game time, and their eyes lit up when they saw the field,” a grinning Seaver said. “A lot of them had their cell phones out, taking pictures of this beautiful park.”

PAWTUCKET – At one time, the Red Sox felt Triple A was the perfect place to impress upon the finer points of game management to up-and-coming catchers. 

The organization changed its philosophy shorted after drafting Blake Swihart in 2011. Now the art of calling pitches and understanding opposing hitters’ tendencies gets started at the lower levels.
