Providence College basketball | Awards season could be kind to Friars, for a change

PROVIDENCE – They have been playing Big East men’s basketball since the 1979-80 season. Care to guess how many individual honors from the conference office that charter member Providence College has collected?

Give up? Try four. John Linehan was named Defensive Player of the Year in consecutive seasons (2001 & 2002) and Herbert Hill and Kadeem Batts each earned Most Improved Player kudos in 2007 and 2012, respectively.

Kentucky played host to SEC league door matt Auburn and appropriately blew them out of the gym. Kentucky used a 23-2 run in the first half to break open a 27 point first half lead. They never looked back as Auburn never seriously threatened again. Karl Anthony Towns led Kentucky with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

COVENTRY — The Coventry boys basketball team picked the worst time to go into a prolonged offensive funk.

Coventry averaged just 42.7 points a game during a three-game losing streak to end the regular season and the No. 7 Oakers’ struggled on the offensive end again in Sunday’s Division I preliminary round game against high-scoring No. 10 Woonsocket.

PROVIDENCE  –  Jack Bauer wanted desperately to reel in a first-ever individual state title at the R.I. Swimming Championships at Brown University’s Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday.
 
Actually, it’s been something he’s talked about since last winter, when he came close in both of his specialties – the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke.

Saturday’s meet at the Providence Career & Technical Academy field house figures to be no exception with the chase for first-place finishes and berths in the New Englands beginning at 11:30 a.m. with the field events. The running events will commence at noontime.
