Mount St. Charles Volleyball | Potent service game gives MSC 3-0 win over Pilgrim in D.I playoff opener

WOONSOCKET  –  What Mount St. Charles sophomore Jarod Tessier pulled off on Thursday night left schoolmates screaming their approval, fans astonished and Pilgrim High head coach Mike McGiveron scratching his head.

During the third game of the R.I. Division I Tournament quarterfinal match, with the Mounties already having claimed a 2-0 lead in sets (though they didn’t come easy), Tessier used his Saturn V rocket serve to score 13 straight points and help the hosts roll to a 3-0 triumph.

NORTH SMITHFIELD  –  Mount St. Charles opened fast with five runs in the first three frames and later downed Division II-North host North Smithfield, 9-2, in both teams’ regular-season finale on Thursday.

Four juniors – including Eric Abruzzi, John Montani, Alex Lataille and Colin Cannata – posted two hits apiece for the Mounties, while senior Mike Dixon had a triple, single and a run scored.

BURRILLVILLE  –  Once the final horn sounded Wednesday afternoon, members of the Burrillville/North Smithfield Co-op squad sprinted toward the cage manned by senior goalkeeper Mark Pasquariello, pounced on top of him and began chanting, “We’re going to the ‘ship! We’re going to the ‘ship!”

They referred to the fact that the Broncos qualified for the R.I. Division III Tournament championship game at Brown University’s Stevenson Field at 1 p.m., Sunday.

FRANKLIN – Cumberland High suffered no letdown after a key Division I-North triumph over rival Tolman on Monday night.

Twenty-four hours later, the Clippers reeled in non-league foe Franklin, 4-2, on Tuesday to assemble important, back-to-back wins.

Against Franklin, sophomore righty Sydney Provencal allowed just two hits and a walk while fanning four in a five-inning stint, while sophomores Sam Jalbert, Maddi Leite, Provencal and Emily Anderson all produced a hit and an RBI.

WOONSOCKET  –  Over the past week, Lincoln High sustained two defeats in its last three contests after opening its Division I-A campaign at 12-1.

Those were rather tight affairs against La Salle and Hendricken, and some may have wondered, “Are the wheels coming off?”
